Maybe some of you Photoshopers can help me with this:
2 things:
#1. I've used Painter more than Photoshop for picture making. I think one of the reasons, and I'm sure this has been addressed, is that I can never draw a fast circle in Photoshop. I always get a wacky-cool polygon...never a smooth circle like I do in Painter...What is the reason for this?
#2. I'm using Photoshop 6, What are the 'Bread & Butter' tools to use. Right now I use the normal brush tool, with 'wet edges' at variing opacities. That seems to be pretty useful for controlling is values. What are other tools are indispensable?
thanks,

1. That's a problem with Photoshop's brush system. No matter how fast your computer, it's not going to fix it. It's only slightly better in PS7.
2. Brush is all you really need, maybe some lassoing from time to time, but the brush is the essential. I rarely use anything but those two. |

Hey Vance,
For digital painting you should really install PS7. 7's brush engine is a MAJOR update from 6, and can express itself much like Painter's can, i.e. much more organically than 6. It's also much quicker and cleaner in build than Painter. The only thing IMO that Painter's got that outclasses PS is the colour wheel and the cool (but processor intensive) water brush engine.
The "polygon" circle issues are mostly solved in PS7 as well - using interpolation to smooth the drawn curves, just like Painter does.
Another edge PS has is the superb colour adjustment tools. (Adjustment, Levels, Curves, etc) Fiddle around and you'll see _________________ www.torsteinnordstrand.com |

just a note. its not depending on how fast your computer is, its the updating Hz in the drawing table that is the problem. I think its only 50Hz or something like that. Thats why the circlemovement doesn't draw like a circle. |

Hey Vance
It was good to meet you when you came to visit our studio - rreally great work!
Anyway, I don't remember if 6.0 has this, but 7.0 has a check box in the brushes tab called "smoothing." Having that checked eliminates some of the polygon effect, but I find I still need to draw slower in order to get the right shape. _________________ Francis Tsai

Tinusch, Torstein Nordstand, Fook, I was playing with PS7 at my last job and I liked it. I'm using Photoshop a lot more now in the initial stages of a piece or to do major color adjusments especially variations, color balance, and replace color.
Francis- Thank you. It was good to meet you too., It was great to see your studio. Farzad seems to be a solid guy to work for.
