As part of a website design, created this panther image in Photoshop. Based upon a title card image from the 1942 movie "Cat People." Drew out each individual shape with the pen tool, then swicthed to a selection mode & either used the gradient tool or the paintbrush.

Insert image: (alt+p)

Not saying this is how you should do cause there are a million ways to do a painting and maybe you didnt want to have c&c, I hope you did.
From what I saw in your panther the lighting is everywhere and that can also make the image or object appear very flat. Some of the light is from the front and some from the left and the right.
I made an over-paint, its not perfect in any way but perhaps it shows you how you can do with a certain light direction, mine is from the left which is my favourite direction of the lightsource.
Otherwise the panther is very stylish and looks pretty cool, the main issue the lighting.
ok I hope some of it helped, if not feel free to beat me up.

see you and Happy Halloween
Matthew

Thanks for the comments and the illo showing me what you mean.

I didn't even think about the light sourcing since I took the initial direction off the image in the movie title card. But, you're right, the lighting IS all over the place.

If I hadn't made the gradations manually, I guess I could've set it from the Photoshop light effects filter, that would have been more uniform - - - I'll try that when I get a chance with the image.

Thanks again for the comments.

IMHO, if u want to get the shading/lighting in u should just do it with the brush tool. this makes it look more....i dunno, i guess 3d...depending on the way u do it...but i no it makes it better.

Cool stylization, but ditto on the light source. You should do this in Illustrator! It would make a great vector piece.
