In the general preferences you can click at a little thing that says "draw zoomed-out views using area-averaging"

it doesn't do anything as far as I can tell. has anyone got it to work? sure would make my life easier Smile

thanks

Area averaging isn't enabled the same way as it is in Photoshop. The function is pretty misleading since it only works on images that are viewed at under 100%. Additionally, the algorithm appears bilinear, not bicubic, so the visual quality can get a little "band-y", if that makes sense. Sadly, there's no work-around for this issue other than finding the mathmatically friendly magnification levels where the pixels jive with the code and you get a reasonable anti-aliased display. If this is real important to your workflow, you can try and set your mangnification increments to match those levels a little better, Also, don't forget that double-clicking the magnifying glass icon in the toolbox will set the image to 100%, which should be perfectly anti-aliased on any screen.

um.. are you sure about that? i saw a comparison made by a japanese guy where he had screenshots of the same image in painter 6 and painter 7, both with area averaging. The one in painter 6 looked smooth and great, the version 7 looked like crap.

he had listed it as a bug in painter 7. There are also references to this in chineese websites but I don't understand a word of it.

wtf getting this feature to work will save me money! then i won't need that 20' flat screen @ 1600x1200!

thanks pat!

Yeah, I saw the same website. However, it's not a bug, it's simply a code change. The same code is still in Painter 8, so upgrading will not correct the issue. Starting in version 7 the function changed, I'm guessing to increase the program's speed. Version 7 was, in fact, a very large overhaul, which is why many users still prefer 6.
