I was using Paths in Photoshop 7 for the first time since version 5.5 and I don't quite understand how they've changed it.

It used to be the case that you select "Pen", draw a nice bezier shape and click the 'Quick Selection' button to turn it into a selection that you could use just like a template.

However, when you draw a shape with the Pen, it not only creates the path, but a horrible new layer with a filled shape as well, which you have to manually remove, and if you remove the filled layer it removes the path as well. Ungh???

You can pull the opacity bar to 0%, but even so, you have to do this every time you use the Pen tool. Surely there's a way to turn off all this extra new-layer-and-filled-shape nonsense?

Don't fear, there is. I actually had the same problem but I figured it out after a bit. In the pen tool toolbar, on the far left there are two buttons side by side. The first is a box with circles on the corners and when you roll over it it says shape layer. This is what you have set right now. The other is a pen inside a box with circles on te corners. This says paths, and this is what you need to select to return to path mode. And don't underestimate the shape tool. If you are using a path to fill an area, just use shape and it fills automatically.

Good question btw
