HI there
First thing I noticed was everything looks distorted (nose too small or lips too big/eyes etc). Was this done from a reference? It is possible to have a girl look like this (although rare may be). Also the cheeks seems to pop out alot (maybe you were going for it but Im just calling it as I see them )
*EDIT* I like the first sketch the best overall of the others... maybe the shading is what threw it all off...maybe... */EDIT*
The hair could look more realistic looking (it looked better and less noodley in your first sketch) don't try to draw every strand of hair there is on the head or you will make it look noodly, try and simplify it by just shading it and adding dark values and using an eraser take them away/making highlights then come back in here and there with the pencil again and givin it a few strokes. The whole shape of the head appears to be off (maybe because of the distortion of eyes, nose, etc)... and I don't see the forehead(along with the other part of the head) but also the eyes lay in the middle of the head looking straight at it.
Shading on it looks nice but remember, set your lines exactly how you want it before you jump into your values n shading (along with the details) or theres gonna be troubled waters ahead. You will spend about a half hour on shading and then "ooops it looks like it should be a little more over there" but it happens
I am also confused a little bit where the light is coming from (from straight ahead and to the left?) Just work on it a little more and maybe use a reference of a womans head for reference. I still have problem with anatomy on figures, leaving things out or just making mistakes that I have to just leave the picture alone for a day or two... come back to it and then the mistake shines through the fog like a lighthouse.
Just practice more and it gets easier everytime... and have fun with it
Gluck and post updates
PS... sorry for the long post and if you didn't read the whole thing I don't blame you... I have a hard time shortening my posts (type pretty quick). _________________ Meep meep |

Hey
I am very thankfull of your post. I also noticed the distortion of proportions and such, but that is because I didnt use any reference for making the proportions. I only use shading and lightning reference and the lightsource is coming straight ahead.
I made the cheeks bulge because it was my intention to make a 10 year old girl, even though I realise she realy doesnt look like one.
I am very weak in making hair and I constantly fail doing it realisticly, but I appreciate your advice on that greatly.
Thx a lot for the post, it wanst too long, in fact, I like such posts, cause to be honest I am not that long in the drawing bussiness, about 9 months now, and every commend is welcome

Hey thx for the tip
I already had a large number of loomis pics, but for some reason i missed these. Looking at his art, which is technological speeking quite simple, but so realistic............ sigh, if i can ever become that good?

Not without reference I think
I like the way you create depth through shading.
Maybe it's a little extreme ... reminds me of Hogarth.
Loomis has a more subtle style.
That doesn't mean it is beter or worse though _________________ http://www.conceptworld.org |
