well, tht's kind of a stupid question:
i usually listen to gothic, neofolk and all the dark and/or heavy metal styles.
i am also interested in electronic music as long as it's dark.
i listened to some tracks of a bands caled hocico and dsamn, that rocks. i read that their style is aclled ebm. i know, there's also industrial and darkwave out there.
anyone here who can tell me the differences between ebm, darkwave and industrial?
thx in advance

faustgfx is an expert in that area, but I'm a fan as well, so here's my take:
EBM(Electronic Body Music)is like industrial and synth pop(think Depeche Mode)combined. It's not as hard as industrial, and tends to more dance oriented. Front 242 was a pioneer in that area.
Indistrial- this term now covers a very wide range. In the begining, it refers to very experiemental music made by guys like Throbbing Gristle, Cabaret Voltaire..etc. It was almost unlistenable--mostly just looped noise. Then, it evolved to be more musical. Now, the defining acts that represent industrial are guys like Ministry, Nine Inch Nails, Skinny Puppy(no longer), KMFDM..etc.
Darkwave- It's pretty much just electronic music with a gothic twist.
Generally, many bands cover all three types you mentioned. |

isn't apoptygma berzerk a well-known industrial band? well... maybe it's just me but i can't find anything that sounds "industrial" in it. it's just very easy listenable synthie doodling without any agression. imho
thanks as far, all this seems to slowly lighten up a bit more. |

These guys have pretty much got it covered Apoptygma Berserk - it's not just you - i came across them being talked about in goth/industrial clubs - found an album, listened to it - and promptly made a coaster from the CD! (Welcome to Earth) - there's always the possibility that it's a side-project of a more 'heavy' group - eg: Front Line Assembly,Noise Unit,Delerium,Intermix etc. (guitar, drums, shouting, through to chilled techno, same geezer behind it all!)- who knows?
[edit] - if you're after extreme noise - try Gabba most of it is pants - but there's some classic 'pure rage' tracks and artists out there

thanks satan
do you know any details that could help me define the borders between these styles (ebm etc...). if i know what is what, it's more easy to talk about what kind of band i'm searching for. |

Attempting to definitively state what is and isn't on which side of the EBM/Industrial/Goth/Metal/Techno lines is pretty damn impossible in my book -
I call some things Techno - others call it Metal - the best thing i can think of
(other than clubbing - and asking the DJ what is playing when you like it)
is to hit this site : Metropolis and search around ,
Lunatique and Maceface are pretty much spot on with the loose definitions they've given -
Faustgfx would probably give a similar(yet subtly different) take on it.
There is also not only the problem of side-projects but also the fact that many bands/groups/artist's style of music varies from one album to the next - and further annoyance as 12"/EP/Remixes are either potentially hard to track down - or sound different again -
You are entering a pale-skinned,manky-haired world of confusion |

pale-skinned works fine with me, as i am a gothic and look like one. (pale etc...)
well, i know from metal that there are no borderLINES but nevertheless, there are certain characteristics for each sub-style.
listen to hocico and listen to apoptygma berzerk. the difference between those two bands are so damned huge. apo... could play in radio as it doesn't sound any agressive or dark while hocico is one of the most agressive bands i encountered in the dark electric corner of music.
i just want to know what's meant for example when someone speaks of "strong ebm influences". i'd have to know what is the main characteristic of ebm (etc...)
i already sent a personal message to faustgfx as i can't find an email address in the profile and on his site.
[edit]
just found this one here: http://www.electronicscene.com/genres.cfm
very helpful

EBM influenced would be industrial music with lots of drum machine programming, danceable beat, usually 16th note bassline and higher octaved bleeps.
Some bands that defined EBM: Front 242, Frontline Assembly, Bigod 20(some of it)..etc. |
