Well this is my first post here, well first 'real' post....
I'm working on a dragon, it started out more as a test of new paper (bristol).
Could use some C&C
I'm 19, and still learning and stuff so do keep that in mind.
a bigger version

(it's not scanned cause that would take ages... I'll scan it when I finish the dragon, and again when I finish the background )

WOW I think it's great!
I would be glad f I could draw like that! (I'm 19, too)
Just think that the legs are a bit too short... perhaps...
But I am not sure...
Very good work! I like it! |

Thnx for the comments!!!
I made the legs short to have a more fat/heavy dragon effect
The big version of the picture is as much closeup as I got right now... hopefully a bigger one soon! |

despite the legs being beefy on purpose, i still think they're a little too short. you have them stretched out and they're that length. i doubt he'd be able to walk too far or even around his cave or whatnot with short legs like that. perhaps if they were longer, and bent at the knee and at the heel? _________________ Ylla's Art Gallery

Just wondering do dragons have flap at the forward part of their forearms? So I checked it out.

Of course bats are not dragons but still.
Still looks good regardless of implausibility.

Dragons are an implausable creature because they're not real. Anything that large could not fly in real life without the aid of magic. They're too heavy to be supported by wings of normal size. They'd have to by huge to support the weight of it's body to even glide. But then it's a fantasy creature, so it's not really important. |

What does matter, however, is making a believably lit figure. The dragon seems to be lit from all sides. Consider your light source and how it will affect each part of the dragon, and you'll be able to show much more depth. |

Jost: Thanks for the support! It's great to see people think along! , allso I drew this picture out of my head with no reference
amichaels: Very true!
Drew: You have a point there, but if you look at reality light does not come from just 1 spot! there is deffuse light all around and so an object is lit from all sides
Thanks for the comments! |

That is true. However, it does not come at an object equally on all sides, not does sunlight cast itself as unequally as you have shown here. The tail has a bright light on the top, and seems to be well lit underneath. Yet, the creature's left rear leg does not seem to be lit on the bottom. It is lit to the left and in front of the creature. It's left front leg, however, seems to be taking light from all over. The opposite front leg has indefinate lighting, but it's definately not lit from the creature's right, though the leg right behind it most certainly is. The creature's right wing is lit from directly above, but his neck shows a lightsource to his left, with deep shadow on the right. That would not be there if the creature was lit from above as the wing and tail show.
Light does come from all sides...if there is something that it reflects off of. Your creature is flying, I presume? Let's assume that the lightsource is the sun, and the light bouncing off the ground. The creature should be nearly backlit, with highlights on top, shadows on the sides, and then the underside would be slightly lit. What you've done is guess at the lighting and it severely flattens your image. Even if he were in an unusual lighting situation, such as flying in a snow covered mountain range, your lighting is still inconsistent.
It's too late for this image, but pay attention to the lighting in your next image and I think you'll be even happier with the results. |

I think that the dragons right arm should be darker.
Maybe be able to see the ground, far far far down there? Just a suggestion.
Anyway, looks really good. Keep it up! _________________ The truth hurts. Sure not as much as jumping onto your bike with the seat missing, but it hurts. |
