I'm a very bad explainer, but what people mean by cold and warm colors is: Warm colors often have a tiny bit of Red, yellow and orange in them, which makes them look warm, and cold colors have a bit green or blue in them, making them look cold. Though, a green can be warm, if it has a small amount of yellow in it, and so on.

I made this little color chart for my site. Can you tell which of these colors are cool and which are warm? There's a cool yellow and a warm yellow. A cool blue and a warm blue. Can you tell which is which? (Hint: the "cool" colors are always to the left.)

Cool and warm colors. Cool colors tend to recede and warm colors tend to come forward. Warm colors are generally seen as being brighter even if they aren't.

Now, a lot of artist talk about cool and warm colors. But really I don't think they are that important and should really be used with care or else I will say "what is that blue shadow doing".

Light works in very magical ways and it doesnt follow some silly artistic conventions.

Having said that.... sometimes an artist likes to use cool colors to enhance value transitions. ie using cool colors in shadows or warm colors in shadows.

Place a red square on a blue background and notice what happens.. place a blue square on red background and see whats happen.. of equal intensity.

Find some good books too.

Cool and warm is a relationship thing.

Alot of this is getting too confusing. Light makes no sense at all to me.

Read this- it's pretty thorough. Smile http://www.fountainstudio.com/watercolor%20tips/tip-mixing_colors.html
