Is there any Wizardry 8 players here? What do you think of it?

I bought it last week, fired it up, and all there is are combat sequences, one after another. Frankly, I think that spoils the whole game. I could never play it for over 2 hours per session, because the combat sequences are slow and frustrating. It's frustrating because the enemies are usually a lot stronger than you and there are lots of them. Only at the very beginning of the game, I encountered 12 level 4 rats, and they left me badly wounded. When I entered the city, more combat follows. And that really annoys me.

But I admit there are a lot of good things about this game, and that's why I still play it. The story and the setting is very different from the other RPGs, and the Mooks looks like Wookies! I named my Mook ranger 'Chewie'. Other than the conventional player classes, gadgeteer and ninja are fun to try out.

Anybody else wants to share their experiences in this game?

Hey I'm playing it right now here at work(yeah works pretty hard, playing games and shit is a bummer ).
Constant combat aye, toggle the enemy speed up to max, otherwise go make a sandwich while the game has its round.
I think I just encountered those rats your talking about(upper monastry?)....little bastards, made me unleash all I had.
Fighter, Wizard, Gadgeteer, alchemist, Ranger, Monk.
Decent game, I like it. I prefer turnbased over realtime so this suits me fine. Dig the medi-evil/alien plot too.

It's pretty good, I personally use the turn-base mode too. My current party consists of a fighter, a gadgeteer, a wizard, a ranger, a samurai, and a priest. It's getting better now that I changed the control scheme so I can now strafe more easily, so that I'm almost always facing the enemy.
Speaking of rats.. have you seem those breeder rats in Trynton? They're basically giant rat babies, they look cute and not so vile, but they're really tough. I hate rats.

How do you set it to always facing the enemy?

The rats in this game are rather large. Expected of course, true to life size rats wouldn't be much for a party of specialist fighters and mages. I worked that out.

There really isn't a way to set up so you can always face the enemies. But like in any first-person shooter, you changed your control scheme so up arrow key is for moving forward, down arrow key is for moving backward, left arrow key (or "a") is for straging to the left, and right arrow key or "w" for strafing to the right. You could turn your face by drag-clicking your right mouse button. Personally I feel that gives me more freedom and precaution.
