I thought this one might deserve a post of its own,
The thing is, it might look like a speedpainting, but I spent quite alot time on it, I startd out painting something that would be very detaild and clean, and then I left it for 3 weeks, and tonight I flattened all the layers and started spicing things up a little, so I actually worked backwards, painting somethign and then smudging details away and covering stuff with bigger strokes and sketshy stuff, I think it's fun to work like that, and the sketshy version ens up looking better than the first one!
sorry for the dodgy perspective

My God Captn! :D
I am so impressed with how you make small strokes and then have the confidence to leave them. If I do small strokes I usually over-work them and dont have the courage to leave them. Well hehe unless I am doing a speedy cause then I would leave all the strokes ..hehe
Keep it up

thank you matthew!
BTW I have a tip, or like a suggestion I dunno if you know this already but I saw this tutorial of a guy that u painted, and somehow I liked the MIDDLE, version more than your final result, how bout in the future you try to leave the stuff you do half way, and practise on painting less on the picture but getting more out of it!? I dunno if this sounds stupid stop me if I'm wrong!
Cheers |

Hey
Yeah you are totally right, somehow I tend to over-work my pieces when in fact the pictures looks better in the early progress.
I like the tip here, I am gonna try it out on my speedys.
Thank you Captn you are the greatest. :D
Ok I am flooding your thread here, have a nice day.

you can see you've spent a decent amount of time on this, the mood created is superb and it is nice to see finished pieces that aren't rendered to hell, shows immense style |

Absolutely astonishing
I don't know why, but I kind of got a sense of Metroid Prime work when I looked at this, might be the wall texture or something silly like that
Very good job. |

i love this!
question for you cap'n, since you're tight with color and all: do you use alot of layers? brush blending modes? layer blending modes? whatever it is, it greatly enhances your work. _________________ talent is overrated. |

did you really paint that light fully? or was some blending option used? like colour dodge(on brush or layer)? _________________ Derelict Studios|Godwin's Space |

Flush, as always, very impressive.
I'd like to give a slight critique if I may. The pillar in question's position seems a little hard to locate. The top looks like it's in the doorway, and the bottom like it's up close. I dunno, that's what I see anyway. It's impressive how you can actually get the brightest of colours to wark so well!

Man, You have such a seductive way with the brushes...
This reminds me a little of the Chizra level from Unreal. (that's a good thing ) I think actually it's a very odd composition that's painted beautifully. The column really hits the eye and blocks the view into the background. Also the capital /scrolly bit of the column is not at the top as it would usually be, but who cares when the painting is this lovely. _________________ Saturnfive Design |

Thank you for the great compliments everyone!
Spyro: thnx right now I hate rendering stuff to hell cause let the photos do that job haha!
Tomasis: I hope that's a good thing?, I didn't look at anything, promise! I really dont want to be a ripper offer/copy catter
london works great, but I have to choose between 2 companies now and theyre both very nice!
Cold Blue Expressions: I have never heard of Metroid Prime, what is that? I'm really curious!
CwStone:thnx, I think mattews tute is at the speed thread, or robotica thread cant remember, but it was a long thread like those.
Wasssup: I was scrolling to se who wrote that and was very surpprized it was you! I'll promise to do more chix, but it wont be a purdy sight ehehe
apb: nope u chose great words, thanx!
Seung Ho: nice to hear from you, Londons Great, a bit lonelly after work though, I have to choose between Framestore and MPC, (12 months from both) wich one did u like the most?
I hope youre kicking ass in the states, time flies doesn't it, remember that dahmn bus ride to Mediagymnasiet!
I'll say hi to the peeps from you!
Probustion, somtimes I play around with the layer options (color burn for dirt and rust and color dodge for hilights and multiply to hide unwanted details and so on) I often create a new layer but I often flat them so I wont get too many of them, It's like an extended history, I duplicate a layer and test somethign, if it sux I just delete that layer and continue with the old
Bobuke: haha I freeze when people cal me sir, thanx for the compliments little childish lady!
Godwin: color burn, multiply and stuff like that was used on some layers, but be sure you know how to paint it by hand also if someone claims you cant hahaha
Sukhoi: It's supposed to be a broken roof over the pilar, like the pillar holds up a section of the remaining roof but everything around it has falen down? well it might not be an explanation so I'll just have to work more on persp and form haha
I looked at a pillar and it was designed almost exactly like that, I guess pillar artists went crazy back then too
I've got to try unreal everyone talks about it and I dunno eanything about it so embarassing haha
thanx all! |

thanks cap'n for the info.
you won't be impressed by the original unreal, seriously outdated. still one of the best longest first person shooters ever. still it had some kind of atmosphere you seldom find in games.. _________________ talent is overrated. |

Probustion: YEAH! Extreme high rez skydomes compared to other games, mathematically calculated water waves? and nice moody mod tunes.
Flush, I can see where it's supposed to be, but I don't feel it in my gut, you know?! If you'll allow a small overpaint , I could show you what I mean, and then we can discuss the pros and cons and whatnot?

Metroid Prime is a game for the GameCube, which has some of the best scenery artwork I have ever seen in a game |

I think of all the work you do, your architectural pictures are my favourite. The way you handle light and colour and and the sharp angular edges is always impressive. Your gothic cathedral is still probably my all-time favourite art piece period.
My only crit with this one is that there is too much going on at the top, compared with the bottom. It leads your eye straight upward and off the page. Also, you have three areas with very high contrast and there's no real focal point ( these would be top-left, center-right, and bottom-right ).
I think your idea of creating and then systematically obliterating, or sketchy-ing up a piece is nice. Keeps the finished yet sketchy look. |

I think that the fact there is nothing at the bottom of the page, creates a feeling of depth and height to the pilar. If you know what i mean
But I don't really know too much about Art (as of yet ). |

This is beautiful. A lot more personal than other polished/finished stuff. Maybe the mind doesnt need all the details.
I have a question. How do go about perspective? Do you plan it out carefully before you start? Or does it start with something minimal and get developed as you go? Or what would you recommend even? _________________ "A fear of weapons is a sign of retarded sexual and emotional maturity" - Sigmund Freud |
