Hello
It was some time since I made my own art thread
so I thought I was gonna show some of my latest
pictures before I update my site with them.
Maybe you have seen some of them during my
work in progress in the speed-painting thread.
No ref was used for these and they are all a part of
my summer-playing pictures.
Will maybe be a card for Magewarfare, we will see.
Thank you for watching my art
see you
Matthew

Yay. Lot's of progress there Matthew. Your stuff has really taken off lately, in regards to handling photoshop, colour and different styles. Good to see.
I'd suggest you start taking some steps back, back to the basic lineart. To learn more about proportions, weight and the likes. You know basic anatomy and perspective. This is what you need most right now I think.
I need to take steps back aswell, as I'm now feeling at home in the digital arena, but still lack plenty of basic knowledge. (as a justification to telling you the same)

Hey thank you guys for the answers here. :)
see - hehe yeah it almost looks like he has no feet, thank you.
Tinusch - Thank you.
viag - hey viag thank you for your support, I am big fan of your stuff.
Hyptosis - Thank you
Sukhoi - Yeah I know what you mean, I have books about muscles and all so I will go through them more accurate now. Thank you.
I will add these two pictures too my site also, they were made for a game project called Melodramatik. I dropped out of that project cause I didnt have time and such but I made some concepts for castles and characters, these are two of them.
Once again thank you guys above for the answers.
see you

Like it has been said above, your progress in painting is simply amazing.
That's the best images you have ever made. Concrats!
The first looks quite good but I think you could make it more interesting with eighter a different (angle, color,...) lighsouce or a special facial expression...
The next two are awesome. YOu really did a great job with effects there. Especialy in the third one, the guy with the lightsaber (?) - this light effect from behind looks cool. I like the costumes too and this texture....hm...you used it in a demon pice too...I think it fits well
Haha, this elefant is crazy...what is that?
Nice colors there, it doesn't even look digitally.
I wouldn't make such bright highlights on the eyes..wihtout them he looks more evil - except you wanna have a "friendly" monster elefent ;D
the Girl is excellent, great job on the anatomy there. Nice costume too.
Last one is abit too saturated I think. And a Bg is missing...make some dark mountains in the Bg to conect the foreground (castle wood) with the sky and paint a moon...some dragons? - nah that's too "normal"...a flying zebra will do it
Hey, that's just my taste,....all in all this images are well done.
I have to agree with sukhoi on learning the basic things first.
But more important than that is still...(quesswhat?)....to have fun doing it - so go for it.
have a nice day |

hehe Maxinator you are the coolest, thank you for your reply here and yeah you pointed out some really good things. :) btw I saw your pm.
The elefant is the result of looking too much on Dark Crystal, it is not a copy or anything but Iam starting to get obsessed by long heads and all, you are right about the eyes.
The elephant creature was made entirely in Photoshop.
Yeah the fun is the key. :)
I like your comments here Max so thank you for keeping me motivated and for being a friend here on Sijun, thank you. :D
see you in the forum

Good matthew ure learning! But please DO use reference to build up your library in the head, think of the head as a huge hard drive with tons of reference pictures from where you have been and things u have seen! I mean most people say the words "no ref" just to brag, I admit that I have done that too.
keep up the improvements!

I too think you should use reference Matthew.
I'm pretty sure Craig meant that drawing from life is better than drawing from photos.
Drawing from photos is ok when you know the basics and understand why you see what you see.
The Magewarfare thingie kinda reminds me of:

Wow thanks for all the comments.
Khaifin - Yea I use a small wacom tablet which is starting to get worn out, 10x times better? :D , Thank you.
Capt.Flushgarden - Hey Thank you for coming back and give me comments and tips Capt.Flush, I really appreciate it. :D I like the idea with the hard-drive there, Thank you.
Signature - I like the picture there, it reminds of the creatures in the movie Dark Crystal. my painting school starts in the end of August so there will be a lot from life reference from now on. :D Thank you for the comments.
So are you AndyT? what happened with your ordinary nickname?
Capt.Fred - Hey nice to see you in the forum again. :D Thank you for your comments here and keep up the good work you too.

I really like you being part of this community - just an example of how to never give up but going straight to become a real good painter instead.
If i think of sijun, first of all i think of Mullins and Matthew!
I did an overpaint of the castle-at-night-landscape ... well a week ago, but i had not time to post it and i didnt want to cut the description.
First of all you have to make a clear decision about the lightsituation.
As you're going to put fire-light into your picture, i would say, its in the late dusk, right dark now. (Instead of the early dusk where the sun is still quite high above the horizon to show such well saturated tree- and blueskycolors)
So first of all i desaturated the vegetation and darkened a lot so that light is only a bit on top of the trees and where the torches light the grass/bushes up. And well a quick sky to show the rough light-direction and give a lighter background for the dark appearing forrest - but still not as light to kill the brightness of fire.
So i decided to make those torches the lightest things in this picture -> white. And because of this the light-radius of those torches had to be visible. While i changed all of this i added more depth to the picture - some backgroundhills and i changed the flow of the road.
Hope it helps.
And well, i have to agree with Flush, you have to look how things in RealLife appear, even if you want to make phantastic-onotherplanets pictures. You have to learn how(and why) things look realistic to make the scene believable. And lightsituations are to difficult to understand just by some keywords as "direct light, backlight, diffuse light, second lightsource" etc..
And in the end, if you want to make a real good picture in realism as in composition too, you have to change the "real situation" and whats going on there and change the colors and values with it, instead of just change colors/values and mess it up.
For example, if you have a lake in your picture, the appeareance of the lake and what they reflect(vegetation/bluesky/sunlight) depends on the intensitiy of waves(i.e. high waves reflect light which is in the back of the viewer). So you can make bluesky and a white lake if you want to - but if you make this with a plane surface of the lake, it looks damn unrealistic. _________________ Lars Gtze

Mullins and Me. :D
I really like this over-paint and thank you for keep giving me advice Duracel, you are the pro with landscape. :)
I have problems with going with texture and form combined together thou (especially in landscapes), either I go with form or either I go with texture, it seems like I cant mix those two but I really like the advice here Duracel so I hope to make a better landscape next time.
As with ref you and Capt are right, I am gonna use it more now, hehe I am gonna expand my harddrive. :)
ok once again thank you Duracel, see you in the forum. :)
