I'm going to copy Spooge and start using huge harddrives as my backup from now on, instead of having hundreds of CD ROMS(and I'm tired of burning CD ROMS all the time).
So, I have a Western Digital 200GB harddrive coming in a few days, and I'm not sure if I should partition it, or just use it as it is. Advice?
I currently have two 40 GB harddrives, and one 80 GB harddrive, and they are my main drives-- partitioned and everything. |

Like i said on eatpoo trancefer all your proggies to your D drive (theres programs that do this for you they rewrite the reg and everything cant think of one atm) then have the 40gb's be backup and the 80gb be your OS and more backup/mp3s _________________ Meep -It pwnz you. |

The thing is, I might be moving to Malaysia, and I wanted to take everything I have with me, on ONE harddrive(less headache). That's why I want to dump everything I own into one drive. Also, once I finish the move, I'd be getting a new computer, so that new PC would have a new OS(I'm using win 2000 pro right now)--probably win xp pro, and also more harddrives. This 200 GB would be used as an archive library--I wouldn't be working out of it at all--it's purely for storage. So, in that case, should I still partition it?). |

i would partition the disk
that would make it easier use norton speed disk or progs like that
taht way you can optimize parts of the disk and you don'T have to work onthe 200 GB in one go
if you use the disk for storage and move stuff around i will workfaster if yo optimize if some times
in my opinion it's easier to work with more but smaller partitions than one big partition |

norton speed disk = speed of death on windows platforms..
u can never properly rely on magnetic media for backing up operations (this is why u should keep 2 copies of things ) but if u want to back-up your files on the HDD go ahead (get a removeable hard disk bay) then u can take it off site etc..
i recently had to recover a HDD for a client who's son (visiting from SAfrica) thought it would b a good idea if he took his HDD out and brought it over with him to show his 4Gb of pictures. they put it in the PC and couldn't bring up the disk... for reasons unknown XP had decided it didn't like the disk (prolly cos it had an OS on it already) so after a few hrs of faffing about with said disk i was able to pull off the images on a DVD for them..
but as ur not going to b putting an OS on the drive u shouldn't have any trouble transporting it about |
