Saturnfive, the entire purpose of the speedpainting thread is to practice this method. (Though some seem to have forgotten that.) It takes a lot of practice. |

saturn five: you say tou do very detailed sketches? is this linedrawings? because I feel that linedrawings/sketches is so much in the way, I almost never do line sketches, because they strangle me and I can't really do what I can do without them. Many times it gets all wrong and I don't have as much luck as with this picture, that's kinda why I posted it =)
try dumping the line drawing process, go with color>shape>form, it's really important to get nice colors in first, because you can't really change them afterwards, and then siluettes or shapes of stuff, after that, if you want something to jump out of the painting, add form and details on that, I spent most details on the jesus painting area and the foreground. the rest I didn't care much for.I think it's very easy to "kill" the image so it's better to practise on not overdoing it with details, I could have spent 10000 more hours on this one, but I stopped at 3, some people like it and some people don't, for me it's all about getting better, well it pleases me if you guys like it but you understand, even though I got crits on this painting, I don't change this image, but I'll remember the crits and think of them next time I'm gonna paint an image.
Oh and zorro was the best cat in the world, ran around like a puppy all the time, cats are really great, but it's hard to loose them, especially when you got it when you were a kid, and when they grow up with you, no fun =( |

Thanks guys
Drew: Ahh, that explains a lot. This probably seems very naiive, but the few times I've tried speedpaintings I've found it very difficult, probably because I used my normal, slow method: draw the details, then colour them in
Capt Flushgarden: Thanks, that's quite enlightening. I've not painted much and I guess I'm so used to lines: pens and pencils, that the idea of blocking in areas of colour like that is quite alien. So it sounds like I have a lot of practicing to do
Sorry for hijacking your thread, now back to that lovely cathedral... _________________ Saturnfive Design |

thanx rudolf!
Saturn V: Yes! it's very dfferent, when I started to paint I made linedrawings and coloured them, but later I kinda converted my brain into painting only with blocks of color, now I can't even draw good on paper hehehe, I think it takes some time to "convert" but I think it's even harder to do both and not screw everything up. |

Well I really like the way you are able to preserve some of the looser brush strokes into the final painting and I guess it lets you focus on the overall composition more, too and makes it easier to get the whole 'balance' of the picture just right. Damn there's so much to learn
btw: when I referred to 'Sparge' using a comparable painting method of blocks of colour, I meant to write "Sparth": the guy who paints those cool bug-robots...I'm not sure who "Sparge" is _________________ Saturnfive Design |

Saturn Five: I understood that you meant sparth, and I've always been amazed how he works, I usually start the other way around hahaha.
I'm glad that you feel that theres alot to learn, and you seem to know what ure talking about, but beware of not thinking about the balance thing too much, just squinch your eyes and feeel it. I have big problems with characters, I try to read all kinds of books, but I'm afraid that won't help, so practise will some day give me the "feeling" wish me luck
Cat_Cat: thanx. I have very bad paciense, and I've learned to take long breaks, days and even weeks, until I get the urge to paint, and somethign good maybe comes out.
cheers all |

aColdOldKodiak: the persp is funky
Saturn five: good! keep at it, BUT, don't continue to noodle on this one, jut put it aside and do another one, and then another one and some more
I recognize alot of classic "errors" that I myself do sometimes too. First I want to tell you that you're a bit too careful with the strokes and colors, I think you should SLAM in color, think of all the main colors, I feel that it lacks red and blue paint, and try to stay away from painting with black paint over light surfaces, because it will look kinda grey colored, you have lots of strokes there, and you kind of "hope" that they will fall into place, but sometimes they don't, so what I would recommend is to do as few strokes as possible and think of where they are needed before you put the pen down and draw. I might sound like I'm telling you to do 2 things here, first that ure TOO careful and that you should be MORE careful. With this I mean: Be careful WHERE you put the strokes, but be more aggressive WHEN you paint them. This is just sugestions and this is what I would think of, that doesn't mean that it's right, so feel free to take it as "advice" from my personal little book iside my brain |

Awww man, . You are totally spot on there. especially about 'hoping' the strokes will fall into the right place :guilty: I understand what you mean about the strokes: once in a while I put down a strong stroke in the right place and it 'clicks' I'll try to focus on that, and yes, the over-blacking doesn't work: it just grays out and kills the forms!. I admit I am scared of strong colour; going to have to force myself on that one. :new mantra- think before apply brush stroke, then be bold!:
thanks a million I think that's really going to help me improve _________________ Saturnfive Design |
