Im not totally sure waht you're asking but I'd say that it'd be easier to define edges if your shading was less smoothed everywhere. I dunno |

Somehow I don't like the saturated colors.
And I'd try to seperate the character from the background.
Even if it's supposed to look as if there's fog.
The attention is kinda drawn to the arm which looks weird anatomically.
That's why I think it might not just be the way you rendered it that takes away from the image.
Make sure the concept works (values, composition, anatomy and so on)
You can try to put more information into the figure and background then go over it again and render what's important.
In this thread you'll see what I'm talking about (hopefully).

OK Let me see if I understand.
Saturated colors are out!? OK, next bright question, what are saturated colors!? I use palat swatches that are pre-deffined already, mostly due to ease of use. I assume thats what you mean.
I thought it would be cool to have him fade into the background, though I'm not so sure I want to do that anymore. I dig on that type of effect for some reason!
The arm is supposed to be stylized, not my favorit drawing, just wanted to use it to practice on making something that looks finalized as aposed to a blob when I take away the lines. (Like my work normaly looks.)
I see what you mean by taking away from the image, if I decide to make this a finished work I will deffinatly take it that far, however at this point its a practice run.
Oh and I failed male anatomy, just dosent interest me LOL (jk).
That thread helped alot on some of the works Im working on. I just dont have the attention span for backgrounds LOL. Sad, I know _________________

About the saturated colors ... I think because of the way he (or it!?) is lit the colors you chose don't fit somehow.
All the actual colors of the objects would be affected by the bluish light.
So there wouldn't be so much difference in the hue I guess.
I can't explain saturation ... hehe my English sucks ... what I meant was that the colors should look more grayish ... not so bright.
I think you'd see more saturated colors in sunlight ...
somebody tell me if that's wrong or doesn't make any sense at all
Ok another example by A. Niklas Jansson ...

That's a good fog-image-example I think.
Damn I can't concentrate ... and have to go now ... I'll edit this reply later
