this is a vynil cover design for the new Audiomicid ep (turntablist crew).
these tracks mix electro sounds (keyboards and samples) and scratches.
so it's not supposed to look like a 'basic' hiphop/turntablist record.
they liked this pic

so they asked me do design something for them. no real constraints, freestyle session.
their older covers were based on graffitis and looked 'underground', they wanted a more 'graphic' look for this one. some kind of futuristic look with a 'pro' feeling.
i thought of doing some kind of cyber-technics deck mixed with a syringe/needle, the first sketch looked like this : (about 20mns)

they liked the overall machine design but didn't want an obvious reference to turntablism, so i tweaked the left part a little bit and started to work on the final composition with the typos.

rightnow, we basically agreed on the layout displayed above (kind of fun step since they are 7 and it's always a challenge to find a way through so many comments and crits).
so basically, it's done. next step will be to finish the design of the machine, add details, work on the typos.
i'll post these here.

now, crits and comments are more than welcome. overpaints, cut'n paste, whatever you feel like could be a good input.
the deadline is the end of this month, so there's still time to modify things.

Wow this is so cool work but I thought something was missing in the frontal Cover, it looked kind of empty.
I made this and I re-used the cool object you had on the back cover.
I have to reapeat once again, this is so cool, must be the coolest Cover I have seen actually, great work. :)

See you
Matthew

mmm... I like the front without that extra bit.

Very nice, I like the extra work with the speakers and the people. I also like how the wires (on the front side) lead your eye to look over on the back side.

Awesome designs.
I'm so glad you actually take the effort to paint these things rather than 3Dmax it or Photoshop junkie it like the kids these days. The effort gives it a great shine.

My only complain is the CD labels, they feels so empty and boring in comparison to the rest of the designs. Perhaps less negative space would help.

HOLY COW!
HOLY BROWN COW!
HOLY BROWN BURNING COW!

THIS IS SWEEET! I absolutely love this. Along with all your work man.

I'd have to agree with aColdOldKodiak on the extra bit on the front and back. It gets repetitive and automatically seems rushed and thought out.

What a great design though. Blows the mind.

Kickass, hpx.

Matthew... no, dude, no. Repetitive. Sometimes, white space is your friend - especially when it supports the overall composition. Hpx is rather ingenius in combining design elements with illustrative techniques. He had it right, in my opinion.

You posted this preview a while back, and it actually remains my fave picture of yours (couldn't say why, it just appeals to me).

I love the CD cover design. Totally spot on.

i'll post the enxt steps on sunday i think. thanks for the feedback !

Matthew, thanks for the input. i think we will keep the extra bit on the back cover : it's now a kind of cyber-glove, that is ripped off from the cyber arm stuff on the front cover. hopefully all the different covers (ep and album) will work as a serie : front cover = some kind of semi abstract shape that is in fact a part of a big robot (arm, legs, torso,...), back cover = wires + an extra bit that is cut off and depends on the part shown on the front (arm > hand, leg > feet, torso > head)

aColdOldKodiak, thanks. i hope the wires will actually work this way. all that whiteness starts to scare me.

DarkVVulf, thanks. i'm starting to regret the paint now that i work in print size. a mesh would have been a lot easier to rerender =P and it's a pain in the ass to keep the rough look at high rez. it's starting to look overworked...i'll try something else for the labels. since it's a vynil and not a cd, it may not be that disturbing, but you got a good point.

Anthony, Max Kullich, thanks a lot Smile

tilokani & hwslut, i think i'll keep the extra bit on tha back. thanks for replying. it helped me choosing actually.

Sumaleth, thanks. i couldn't say why either, but i like this shape too. it's weird how sometimes, the quickest sketches looks better than my long-run efforts. it's kind of depressing now i think about it.
