Heya fellas, my latest doodle. Started as a speed painting, but dragged on for awhile. The arches in the ceiling were such a pain in the butt. I modeled her face after a photo I saw once in an ad in Vogue or somewhere, otherwise no reference was used on anything, and no photos were used. Whatcha think?
Note: The right side of the arch is lower than the left, which caused for a big headache in designing the ceiling! _________________ -Anthony

I like what you have, but here is another way to look at it, so ignore it if you want.
Try to think of what the big forms are and what they are being lit by. The reflected light off the left wall illuminates the railing vertical, but her body shadows it. Stuff like that makes it look more real. Think of her head in the same general way. Once you get the big stuff right, add all the nice detail.
You have saved me from doing boring stuff tonight.

pretty cool, i like it. Especially the mood of the pic.
Youve already recived good crit but i just want to say that your shadows are too sharp, observe more in real world how the edges of the shadows change depeding from the distant from casting object. _________________ portfolio | art blog |

Thanks for the great replies guys!
Spooge - Mucho Gracias for the paintover and explanation. I really have to get over this habit of noodling before getting the main values in(did better here than in the canyon though?). How do you deal with saturation levels in an image that has very strong colored light like this? I found myself fiddling with levels on her dress, trying to balance the very warm illumination with the fact that the dress is blue. I ended up using a compositing app to adjust her dark levels to be more warm.
Andromeda - Thanks! I kinda like the off-ness of the ceiling, its really confusing to look at.
oDD - Thanks man, I agree that I need to *think* more when painting. I keep learning a lot(largely thanks to Spooge here), but it takes a minute for my brain to digest it and apply it. _________________ -Anthony

Hi Anthony
Very nice piece, and I always dig seeing what Craig has to say about others' artwork.
My small comment would be that your perspective seems to have stretched out the walls and floor a little bit. I think the checkerboards on the floor, the width of the door, etc. are longer than they would really appear. If this is a flat one point perspective, the planes receding away from you would be much more extreme than you show, so things like doors and windows almost appear more like a few vertical lines placed close together - you would read very little in their horizontal dimension.
I don't know if that makes sense, but if you can go to a long hallway and look down it, I think you can see what I'm talking about.
Yes, nitpicky point, but just in case you weren't consciously aware of it in your piece... _________________ Francis Tsai

I very much like the feeling you're going for here. It reminds me of the Uffizi in Florence Italy. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

Francis - I'm glad you pointed that out, because I had certainly overlooked it! The way I did the perspective was to create the pattern flat first, then distort/scale/transform into place. What I didn't think about at the time(yes, I'm absentminded ) is how long the pattern should be before distortion. Very interesting!
Inspector Lee - Thanks much! Anytime I remind someone of the Uffizi I'll consider it a success _________________ -Anthony
