Here�s my little report on my trip to the Sargent show.
First, I had to fly back to the U.S. from China, but that�s another story.
The day of the show:
Jucas met me at my mom�s house, then after lunch with my mom, he lead the way with his car while my mom followed in her van(she wanted to see the show too). Halfway there on the freeway, when a car in front us braked, we also breaked, and my mom SMASHED into Jucas� car. My head snapped back HARD because the head-rest for the passenger�s side was lowered to the height of my shoulder. I was like, �OMIGOD, I can�t believe my mom hit us!� and Jucas was like, �I can�t believe your mom hit us!!� The hood and front panel of my mom�s van were messed up, while Jucas�s rear bumper was crunched.
I�ll apologize publically to Jucas here for my mom�s terrible, typical Asian driving. Sorry dude!!!
The L.A. Sargent show was a lot smaller than the Seattle show in 2001. Majority of the pieces were landscapes and figures, with only a handful of portraits. There were also quite a bit of overlap with the Seattle show. I thought I would be disappointed, since I have a preference for portraits, and wanted to see nothing but pieces I�ve never seen in person, but I was floored by some of the landscapes with majestic rock formations. Man, reproductions in the art books look NOTHING like the originals. The choice of colors and the compositions were just breathtaking. The most amazing things about seeing Sargent�s works in person are the choice of colors, the composition, the values, and bold brush work in the most unlikely places, yet does the job perfectly with the minimum amount of required detail. The man really knew his stuff�and presented the world filtered through his technical excellence and supreme confidence that few matched.
When Jucas and I were discussing a piece with golden sunlight on the rocks and the water, with the cool blue shadows reflecting the sky, and how the key and contrast fades in the background, this guy jumped in front of us, and totally got in our faces. He interrogated us, asking, �WHAT is the complimentary of blue??�
Jucas and I looked at each other, and I said, �err�.yellowish, reddish�� and when I was about to say orange, the guy snapped and yelled �ORANGE!! Orange! Orange!!� while snapping his fingers to each word. He then yelled �This piece is a study in complimentry colors!!� He looked at us with disgust, and then stormed off, as if Jucas and I were unworthy to be at a Sargent show. We just looked at each other, and Jucas said quietly, �Do you think maybe that was Jason Manley?�
Before we left, we looked at the reproduced pieces in the book published for the show, and man, they were just terrible. The colors, values, and contrast were completely off. The best way to describe it is: Listening to a highly compressed mp3, in mono, playing through the crappiest pair of speakers, compared to listening to the same piece played by the best orchestra in the world, at the Carnegie Hall, sitting front row center. Not even close. Seemingly uninteresting pieces printed in books could very well take your breath away when you see the actual pieces in person.
We went to see �City of God� afterwards, and it was a pretty cool film. I quite liked some of the very interesting editing and camera work, despite the somewhat amateurish feel that is commonly associated with some arthouse/independent/low-budget films.
This was my fourth or fifth time in L.A., and I don�t care what southern-cal kids say, San Francisco is way better. I mean, San Francisco actually looks/feels like a real city with its own unique idiosycrasies�not just loosely connected districts that looks identical. If it wasn�t for Hollywood, L.A. would seriously suck. :p
Anyway, it was totally cool hanging out with Jucas. He�s one of those teenagers that seems way older than his actual age, and wise beyond his years(My mom couldn�t believe he was only 1 . He was also the most gracious and gentlemanly in the way he handled the car accident. I wish him success and luck in the rest of his Art Center years, and whatever future career he chooses.

No really, though...some people are so self centered - what an asshole (I'm sure it wasn't Jason, either)

LUNATIQUE, I am sorry to say this but I really had a good time reading your exposition report. You have a funny way of telling stories, or at least that seems for a non-English speaker...

Loki- Holy crap I had totally forgotten you're back in L.A.!! In the back of my mind, I still associate you with WETA! LOL!!! I guess you missed it when I plastered "Meet me in L.A. for Sargent show" threads in ALL the forums?  BTW, your website is not nearly as messy as you think it is. I think you should just do a minor facelift instead of killing the entire site?

your statement...interesting that you thought of me ....and interesting that you struggled to come up with the answer to such a basic art question...SMACK!
I am glad to see people go to the museums...especially to see such a great shows. If one studies the old masters works enough, he or she will not be as reliant upon photography in order to make strong work. So...Im glad you went...and am glad you were so excited about it. I'd never be scornful about someone learning in a museum.  I'd be thrilled!
if anyone else is in the LA area...the sargent show would be worth the trip. I saw his retrospective at DC a couple years ago and it was amazing!

How much bigger is that detail shot than the face in the painting. Just trying to guestimate how big his brush strokes actually were....

i forget the actual size exactly...but if you take that image down to less than half that size it would be closer to how big the actual painting was. It might even be as small as 33 percent as big as what you see in the detail shot above
of course i took a camera in there...you didnt?

| I use a digital camera, and in low-light situations like that, the pictures would become a blurry mess without flash. And we all know what they do to you if you took flash photography at an art show.... |

I use a digital cam too! hehehe...
a sony...dsc-f707
i think its called a cybershot...its not cheap...but its totally worth it.

Jason: did you visit the boston library? Ive heard that there is a great mural on the ceiling.

My god... I bust out laughing when I read that. And I don't even know Jason very well at all, but jeeze louise that was funny. When I laughed out loud, my boyfriend was eager to know what was so funny. Of course when I told him he just looked at me because he has not a clue who Mr. Manley is. Oh well.

can you believe how much paint and color is in that shot above???
i keep tripping out at it...friggen amazing stuff....check out the right side...all that color and texture? that guy was not afraid to put it down was he?
perhaps some of you loudmouths can attempt that in stead of making everything monochromatic! heheheheheheeh
