Here is something i am doing.

It is an idea for a short studnet film backdrop/prop i intend to create. As i feel the concept is not really all that great, i am hoping for input/inspiration/criticism from you forum goers.

I am open to anything, so please fire away. What can i add/change/do that you think will improve it?
It is going to be a large mural and as i don't have much time to toss it together, simple is better.

The central gap which everything revolves around will be filled by the actor in the final scene, hopefully bringing out his character dramatically.
Supposedly the finished product should have some sort of profound meaning, which obviously excludes anything happy, etc (that and i'm one of those manic depressant types so thats not really my thing). The more obfuscating and abstract the better. Mostly because people always seem to read deeper into those or at least assume that there is something profound about them.

Thankyou.

first of all, dont ever assume that the audience is stupid, if you assume that people with automatically read into something because it looks like they should, they wont, at least with something big and dramatic like what youre talking about, people read more into things that at first dont look like they have meaning, like the scene in THE RING where the ex husband lifts his coffee cup off the newspaper and they truck in to the coffee ring thats left behind, people in the theater were screaming, "oh my god" and crap like that, the coffee ring didnt have anything to do with anything, aside from the fact that it was a "ring". another good example would be the final minutes of 2001. im not gonna bother to explain it cuz you can rent it and see what i mean. the bottom line is that if its SUPER HUGE SPECTACULAR SWIRLY VORTEX, thats all people are gonna see. second major point, is that if youre only bringing out the character dramatically in the last scene and then ending the film, why are you making me watch the film. a better decision would be to cut off the beggining start it from the middle and add some more footage after this final scene. the last point is that, if this partcular scene is suppose to signigfy some kind of mental change, dont make it random shit, make it stuff of relevance to the characters particular story (key events from earlier in the film, etc.). lastly, let the actors do the job, if the character is supposed to have had this deep change, the actor should be able to portray that without the visual aid, so try orienting the visuals to a more supporting role, instead of being the scenes focus, make it add more depth to what the actor is portraying.. aside from that stuff i can give you some film references with some things that might be similar to what youre looking for.

Fear dot com (ending)
Jin-Roh
Akira
2001
Apocalypse Now
Donnie Darko
The Big Lebowski
Fight Club
Clockwork Orange
From Hell

Hmm. You made many excellent points, all of which apply rather well, suprisingly well considering I didn't tell the actual story.
Will have to think about that.
Thankyou.

sure you dont want to have him sittin facing the audience? No offence, but that kinda reminds me a little too much of poltergiest.

Furthermore, i dont see how this could hold any meaning at all. The first one seems like something that would go on the cover of a movie like triple X or some strictly entertainment movie. And ZippySquirrelnut is right, the more something is big an flashy, the less it has meaning.
But its not like ive seen the film, so i wouldnt really know. But of all the many, many movies ive seen in the past, i cant imagin anything big an flashy like this holding any meaning for any of em.
