Just a few scraps from my portfolio... It's been a long time since I've posted any work at all. Hope someone enjoys them, please let me know what you think of them, positive or negative.
Just a quick acrylic painting done for kicks. I actually didn't put this in my portfolio, though I kind of like it for some reason.
Acrylic. I know... The anatomy is killing me too. Ugh. Forgive me.
Quick watercolor piece. That's about it.
Oil. This was my first time with oils. Basically just experimenting. it was part of a much larger piece involving pirate ships, but it all went to hell soon after the completion of the face, so I cropped it like this.
Acrylic. Sort of a self-portrait. Lost SOOOO much detail in the scan. The background texture was what made this piece, but here it is completely obliterated. Eh.
Acrylic. Another self-portrait.
Pencil. Used photo ref.
Oil. Second time using oils. Lost interest in the background, so I scrawled down some primitive planets and such to fill it in.
Oil. Third try with oils.
Tempera. It was supposed to be Yassir Arafat, not quite sure if I captured the likeness. It's tough to recreate his lifeless fish-eyes, so I think that's primarily what killed the resemblance.
Watercolor. Just a doodle that evolved into a larger piece. Could definitely have used a background. Very Roundeye-influenced.
Pencil. Quick gesture sketch to try to capture the life and motion of the figure without overdoing it on the details.
Pencil. Same as above, second attempt.
Photoshop. This was made for the school newspaper, so it may not make sense as it stands without the caption. It wasn't funny anyway though, so I won't post the caption. Sorry.
Acrylic. Used way too much paint and the canvas started to wrinkle and warp. A little sloppy. Very Jibe-influenced.[/img] |

oooh cool--very different indeed--especially like the 6th and 7th ones since they have good transitions between light and dark---your art looks like it should be part of a book---the faces you make all have some kind of similarity to eachother----nice...keep it ^up _________________ www.andresguzman.com

Thanks a lot for the replies.
insider: Thanks for being so cool about replying to people's threads. We need more people like you around here. Not sure exactly what kind of similarity you refer to, I tried to branch out as much as possible. I guess I'll have to work on that. Thanks very much for pointing that out.
atomicmonkey: Wow, thank you. All I can see in that one are the mistakes. Too many choppy areas and gaps. Doesn't flow quite as well as I'd hoped. But I'm very glad you like it.
Chthonic Divinity: Thanks, I hope the admissions board agrees. The Zeus one is probably one of the weakest... I'd be interested in what specifically you don't like about it, so I don't end up making another like this. |

Some very interesting stuff Tinusch. I think the two self-portraits are working best. They both have a very strong sense of mood and opinion about them, as though it was very clear in your mind what you wanted to convey in each. The Zeus has some very nice textures going on in it (looks like they're probably nicer than the scan captures though), but I think the secondary (blue) light source seems heavy-handed in it's appliction. It doesn't appear as carefully applied as the rest of the piece (especially on the lowered arm). Glad to finally be able to offer some critique on your work. You always seem to have helpful and well thought out crits for other posters on these forums. Anyway, nice stuff. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

cool stuff Tinusch. My two favorites are the pirate and the astronaut. i was instantly reminded of roundeye's cowboy when viewing the latter, but i think you did an excellent job with it - colors and style.
your gesture sketches are excellent too, nice flow of the lines there- but they both have some anatomy problems. (most visible to me are the upper body on the first that seems off axis, and the lower body on the second one which looks too small compared to the upper body.)
The least attractive piece in my eyes is the comic one - i find it lacking the spark that many of the others have, and your struggle with style, anatomy and composition is more apparent. |

Inspector Lee: Thanks a lot. The two self-portraits were a specific requirement for one of the colleges I applied to. They wanted one from direct observation and the other more abstract and creative. The secondary light in the Zeus picture was a last ditch effort to give the thing some life... It wasn't working at all for me, so, as always, turn to the blue light to give it some volume. That picture was doomed from the start. Thank you very much for the helpful comments.
Bilbo: Hey, haven't seen much from you lately. Thanks for the reply. That cowboy picture was my inspiration, I'm sure it's obvious. It got a little sloppy, especially the background, but I'm very glad that someone likes it. The gestures are off, I agree. It was bascially my first attempt with gesture drawing, and I was preoccupied with the quality of my lines and keeping everything as minimalistic as possible that I sacrificed the anatomy. I definitely need some practice with that. As for the comic... The errors in the guy's head are driving me crazy. I noticed that even as I was drawing it, but I just had no desire to fix them. I do have a lot of trouble with these comic illustrations, because I have very little freedom to execute it the way I'd like to. Especially since I'd lose all detail and subtle shading during the scan, and whatever remained would be killed during pressing of the paper. Thanks a lot for your help, I need critiques like this. |

Hey Tinusch, great to see you've been busy. Lots of nice stuff here. I like the spark of humour that can be seen in many of your pics. My top favourites would be the second self portrait(red shirt), the yellow/green headed quy with the white chalk planets, the string puppet boy and the frankenstein. There is kinda splendid feeling in that woods watercolor also. I think the zeus pic would be quite nice too if you made corrections to the shoulder anatomy and to the lighting (as has been said). You should post some of these to that "non digital art" thread.
