Can anyone give me a short critique on drawing technique and what they like/dislike about this creature idea? (Sorry about the blurry digital photo, I'm getting a scanner eventually.)
I will be attempting to create a full body concept drawing and a color version later, but I wanted to work out the head and torso first.
Thanks in advance.

Your pencil work has a feeling similar to "Fantastic Planet" (if you've seen that animated feature). You may want to show a more explanatory view (possibly full body) when you're concepting a new creature. Other than that it's an interesting start. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |

It could need some contrast I think. Some darker strokes to explain as Lee said, or perhaps some highlight here and there?
I made a really quick paintover, not because it explainsa anything but 'cause it was fun

Inspector Lee,
Thanks, I did a quick search on "Fantastic Planet" and I see what you mean. I'm flattered you would even make the comparison.
I'll definitely do this over again with a full-body view and probably one showing the creature in some kind of action "context".
sukhoi,
I totally agree with your suggestion, and thanks for taking the time to do that paint-over. I like the effect. That's just the kind of commentary I'm looking for. |

Here's an update with a full body pencil rendering.
Next, I'm going to go ahead and color it.
C&C's welcome as always.

well first of all.. he's going to fall backwards...
his center of balance is really rearward, so hes going to tip back.
his left leg (our right) seems to stick out toward us unlike the other leg.. the reason for this is the way you've shaded it.. and how it sits lower than the hand... the hand should be farther toward us than the foot. |

Yep, those crits seem valid to me.
Try, try again... |
