EDIT: 1/11/2003 - Done...
ORIGINAL MESG. 1/10/2003
This is almost finished... A portrait of friends - the Liptons. She wanted to be painted as a mermaid... he didn't have much to say about it... but liked the idea.
He's a Doctor of Osteopathy, she's an Acupuncturist - nice couple.

Wow Phil, this is great!
Only one crit, and it's just a personal preference. But I think the pic goes a bit too far to the right and the palm trees are stealing a bit of focus I don't think they should have. I think that the picture could finish nicely just a few pixels past her hair.
Other than that, awesome. The clouds are fantastic too. |

Hey eyewoo, I really like the way you did the scales, the seaweed is a great touch as well!
When you do images like this for people, do you make them really large to make prints for the client? Or is it just a small favour and you send them the image simply as a JPEG? _________________ www.jasonink.net/journal |

Thanks for the comments...
ceenda... Agreed... I'm going to do some more work on the palm trees... they are just roughed in at this point... (1/10/03)
xmmx.. Agreed... working on it...
Matthew... Actually know very little Swedish... none to be more precise ... still working on getting the book published... not easy...
jasonN... This was a barter job for some acupunture time for my wife... so the client (and friends) get the full treatment - a 13 inch x 19 inch print and two smaller prints. Prints are archival on acid free paper... supposed to last for over a hundred years or something such before showing and fading... Wish I could be around to check that out... _________________ HonePie.com

An instant favorite for me, best thing you've ever done in my opinion and you've done some pretty cool sh!t in the past.

Ps. Hope you got at least a thousand bucks worth of acupuncture treatments for your wife out of this.... If not, they ripped you off. _________________ l i q u i d w e r x |

I like the technique .. But I don't like her face and nose - she is not what (in my oppinion) would call beautiful .. It's something about her nose and forehead I think. _________________ /Jesper GB

Thanks Malachi... yepsir... the charge for this portrait would have been $1300. My pricing goes like this. $800 for full figure plus $300 for additional figure plus $200 for unusual extra stuff - the fish tail.
Jesper GB... ???

Hi eyewoo!
First I have to ay that this is very very well done.
I did a little "paintover gif" to practise.
Okay, I know thats a portrait of a "real" person with ref, but I tried it anyway. Just for practise.
Hope that's okay.....
Good Luck!

That's interesting Max... I'm not quite sure what you're trying to do with it. It looks to me like someone wacked her on the forehead and its swelling... LOL _________________ HonePie.com

i think what max is trying to show is that her forehead is sloped too far back in your pic eyewoo.

I dunno, I think the portrait captures the look of the woman in the photo. Not everybody is going to have that perfect mannequin look..
Nice painting man. _________________ Francis Tsai

ditto. I think the resemblence is quite good. Nice work as always Phil.
I would love to see you exaggerate the colors abit. For example around the areas where the blodveins are closer to the skin - nose, ears etc. There are even some nice tones in the ref. photo which you seem to have neglected. It's not the first time I think about this when looking at your art, so it might be that you do this quite on purpose... I just thought I would mention this
But very nice portrait. Hope the couple like it! _________________ big-badda-BOOM! |

I know you painted with ref.
And I don't wanna say she's not beautiful 'cause the "beauty" of a man or woman is different from everybody's point of view. of course....
Well, now I am not sure why I did this paintover 'cause you perfectly copied the ref.
So it's not a crit...it's a try to make her look....younger? yes, I think that was the reason.
I challenged myself, thought I could post 'cause I won...I think and.... yeah.... |

I think I understand what you were experimenting with Max... and I'm sure you understand that when someone comissions a portrait from an artist who paints realistically, the client more or less expects to see a good likeness...
BTW, she's from Italian and eastern european heritage, very intelligent, mother of four and a great acupunturist... _________________ HonePie.com

I like it. Its very dramatic, as far as realistic portraits go. From what I can tell you did a nice job capturing them. I really like the end of the tail, where it swings around on the left of the painting. His face is another favorite areal. I enjoy the warm tones around all four edges. The background colour and design reminds me of http://www.laks.com/images/332bild.jpg a bit. Not that thats a bad thing...
