I was going through some of my files & I happen to find a scan of one of my old Traditional Airbrush pieces. It was done a few years ago over a piece of clayboard when I was getting into illustration I know now that it still had some issues but at that time I thought it was ok. Laughing

hmmm looks nice, great scale texture

but the "lighting" in its eye looks displaced, and its tongue looks too bright...as if it was added afterward

the red is way to bright, a snake's tongue is either more "pinkish" or "brownish".....mostly Maroon

I agree, most of the problems here had to do with the tongue. At the time I used a small photo as reference and the highlights in the eye were really true to it. As fas as the tongue's color is was really bright red.

The main issue was the transition between the mouth and the tongue itself, it was to harsh as I enclosed the shape with masking film and never took the time to blend it properly.

May be now that I know better I should do a PS7 version, I kind of wonder how this sleek scales would look in a human/Snake hybrid or something like that.

Thanks for the comments but I don't think I would be able to go back to traditional airbrushing after photoshop. It was way to much work!

Very Happy

I am another airbrush artist.I mainly paint portraits of people and twisted deathly pages full of skulls and things like that.In my opinion the computer will never take the place of traditional painting - no matter how good the program. There is nothing like standing in front of a big piece of A1 paper or board - cranking you most fav music - filling your paint cap and just start spraying. No computer can compare to that feeling. It is great. Just my opinion.
Unfinished piece I have been spraying.

Bit of pencil - some day soon it will be a big airbrushed pic.

Another pencil I have plans for.

I Agree with you to a certain degree, I also love to go once in a while to oils or acrylics and enjoy feeling of the paint mixing, but as far as the airbrush, I left it a while ago, it was to much work, the cutting, masking the airmasks...

With programs like Photoshop or Painter, it's a no brainer. I see it like the the next step. First you had people walking around, then they used horses, bikes, cars and so on... Does this mean that I won't walk or ride a bike anymore? no way! but not if I have to travel 100 miles away that's for sure.

I guess it comes down to what you need and when you need it. To me now I see airbrush as a recreational activity unless your busines relies on painting cars, jackets or stuff like that. I would never be able to do the same amount of work that I do without PS and with the flexivility that it provides, changing colors, providing your clients with fast corrections etc...

That is a good point. The ease at which we can do things on a computer is great and if you stuff up you allways have UNDO.But as for the stencil cutting you speak of - I have not yet painted using a stencil.I use my hand and fingers as stencils. No masking or anything like that.
But your point on the computers is a good one.
