Michel of Twincruiser: One of these days, for some reason, I became very interested in playing cards and their history. I had the urge to make one myself. After some research on the net and some extensive reading, the concept of the card that struck me most was the King of Clubs. I found out that the King of Clubs is actually the king of thieves, rogues and brigands. This fact inspired me to do this piece. To me a king of thieves does not wear a crown on his head since his position is a secret and seclusive one. Instead he wears an amulet beneath his cloak to prove his power. The amulet has the form of a loaf of bread or a cake symbolizing his petty criminal activities (the beginning of every great crime lord). Also he carries with him a club which in Medieval times stood for the murderer or the deceiver.

Excellent work.
Pinnacle Entertainment Group has an fantasy pen and paper RPG coming out that uses standard playing cards for certain things. (www.peginc.com) Perhaps they'd be interested in the final deck or in you doing contract work to make a custom deck for them. |

could you tell me where you looked. i wouldnt mind looking up the queen of spades. i wonder what her history is and why shes so important in most games dealing with an english deck.
anyways great card concept aswell, the textures on the clothes are darn sweet.

I like it. The graphic look of the king is really nice up against the beautifull textured background. Good Job

Do you know the spanish deck? it's different from the french one (or english, as you want), the one used for poker and so.
It's different and yet similar.
The symbols aren't diamonds, hearts etc but gold coins, swords, clubs and cups.
About the pic, really nice. Makes me think the king is going to jump out of the card. _________________ "Ever forward, my darling wind." -Master Yuppa

Swords, Coins/Pentacles, Staves/Clubs/Wands, and Cups are classic suits from tarot cards. Tarot cards were once used as playing cards, but I don't know much history beyond that and I don't know how they became Hearts, Diamonds, Clubs, and Spades. |

Ragnarok is refering to Briscola Cards (italian), and it isnt gold goins on the cards they are "suns".
my italian friends at school constantly play it...i think the english version is called Euchre. _________________ Life is a sexually transmitted disease. |
