Well here is a portrait of my twin daughter Emily. I painted it 11"x16" in oil and used a basic limited palette. Hope you like it.

Thats BEAUTIFUL pro! You've pulled off the skin tone very well, and your brush strokes are very sharps, not fuzzy like others which i really love. Cutting out the surrounding, i would though its a CG!!!

It is indeed an incredibly beautiful portrait!
I think of things to point out but then i hesitate because they might be things you intended to do. In any case i'll mention them.
The hairline along her forehead has a soft edge except in middle, where it is quite strong i find this a little odd.
I wonder if the hair that falls behind her ears deserve such bold brushstrokes. _________________ It's nice to be important, but more important to be nice - Scooter |

Can you post the limited palette you used? Just curious what you had to work with. |

Hey Greg,
good to see you active again, it's always cool seeing your stuff..
nice site redesign as well...
off topic: could I e-mail you to ask you a question? instead of wasting your time here on your thread..
I showed my gf the pic and typically she's like "ennh" when it comes to her opinions on artwork, but she commented that your daughter is adorable.. nothing about the painting though... LOL _________________ State of Confusion |

Thanks everyone for the comments. I'll try to address them individually.
Dr. Bang and beat- Thank you, and I'm glad to be back.
Novacaptain- Thank you and your right about the hairline and behind the ears. I had a tough time with this portrait, because it's my first oil portrait since many, many years ago. I've been so use to painting in Cel-Vinyl that the change over is slow going. I started this painting with no preliminary work or sketch, and it shows. Painting directly from reference is something I have not done since art school. In painting for illustration, or invention I should say, you can let a few mistakes slide. Here I find the slightest fraction off and the portrait will throw off all other measurements. EEEK!!!!! Although this is no excuse for me, I only need to tell myself this for encouragement. It's so easy to get discouraged when painting this way. I plan to fix this portrait (even though it's dry) and move on to others. If you notice a very subtle ring around the eye, this is an adjustment (digitally) my friend Morgan made. He told me the eye was too high up. I agree and will repaint that too.
Matthew and sleepwalker- Thank you, I hope to get better.
cg- Thanks! and I think my daughter is cute too.
Ragnarok and Max Kulich- Thank you also.
jr- Thanks a million! I am very influenced by Zorn. His only purpose was to capture the truth of the light source. An artist can spend a lifetime trying to do just that.
ZippZopp- Thanks, loose, but when should a painting be finished?
Lunatique- Thank you! By the way, how is married life treating you?
As for my limited palette:
Utrecht White (because of it's great thickness and volume)
Cad. Yellow Pale
Yellow Ochre
Cad. Red
Terra Rose
Viridian
Aliz. Crimson (Permenant)
Cobalt Blue
Ultramarine Blue Deep
From these I found more than what I needed to get the lighting.
General Confusion- Thanks! And go ahead and shoot me an email, I'll answere as soon as I can.
paranoid?- Thanks, and yes it's messy. The tough thing is this, you have about two days of work before it dries. So, you have to work fast and clean. I'm learning that now. _________________ Online portfolio: www.gregpro.com |

Married life is awesome. Finding your soulmate is the most heart-warming and wonderful thing for a human being to experience in a lifetime. I'm a lucky lucky lucky bastard.
Hehe, your palette wan't as severely limited as I guessed. Have you seen Tom Browning's book "Timeless Techniques for Better Oil Paintings"? He demonstrated some examples of limited palette painting, and they were REALLY limited, yet he got an incredible range of colors with them!! Supposedly Anders Zorn's palette was even more limited! |

Lunatique-Ah great! Congrats to you both!
Your right, I guess I'm use to seeing a palette full of many colors. In school we used to use Black,White,Yellow Ochre, and Aliz Crimson.
I have not seen the Tom Browning book, but I am interested to know what Zorn's paletted was. Do you know? _________________ Online portfolio: www.gregpro.com |

sorry Luna sorry pro to interfere
zorn's was White, Black, yellow ocre and Venitian Red. I don't remember my source for that info, though...don't take it for gold
edit : btw greg if you could recommend me a decent book on zorn's art i could buy online, that would be cool. thanks
oh another thing: noticed that you were using terra rosa, wich brand is that ? not that I'm a detail freak, but so far I've been unable to find a tube of it, maybe knowing the name of a brand doing it for sure will help me on my quest. thks again. _________________ ---

Haha, Beat, you beat me to it(pun!!).
That's what I read too, except my poor memory remembered it as Vermillion instead of Venitian Red. But I'm sure you are right, since it makes no sense to have Vermillion and Ochre instead of Venetian Red and Ochre. |
