Hey, sorry if I'm bothering people here, but it is a random musing.
Once again, I'm still lookin around for laptops that will be my desktop replacement for when I move out for university. I was looking around today, and was playing around with some at a the Futureshop, and noticed that for every laptop that I was tweaking with the resolution, anything above 1024x768 didnt fit on the screen and made the desktop bigger, thus making me having to touch the side of the screen to scroll on the whole desktop. Is there a feature where I can make the whole desktop fit onto the LCD screen if I want a bigger rez than 1024x768 ?

Dunno, but i noticed that LCD screens don't work fine with all supported resolutions. I mean a given size LCD will only show fine quality at one or two resolutions out of all. Others either look too crammed or jagged..

Laptops usually are made to work at a fixed resolution (usually 1024x768 these days). So if you set the resolution down to 640x480 or 800x600, what you usually get is a small rectangle on the screen or a stretched image. And as you've already discovered, if you set it higher, you need to scroll around.

That said, however, there is hope. The standard (for LCDs) 1024x768 pixels is known as XGA or Extended VGA. There are two higher resolutions that LCDs support, namely:

SXGA (or Super XGA) - 1280x1024 pixels
UXGA (or Ultra XGA) - 1600x1200 pixels

and there's something called SXGA+, which is kinda in-between at 1400x1050 pixels.

You need to find laptops that support these higher resolutions. I know Dell produces a Latitude model that supports a higher-than-XGA resolution. Not too sure about any of the other manufacturers. Your best bet for a search:

1) Go to www.froogle.com (Google's product search site)
2) search for "UXGA laptop" (without the quote marks)

I got 1902 hits and the top results look like pretty promising Sony and Toshiba models. Hope that helps! And Merry Christmas!

Holy sheikes!

You completely answered one of my long lingering questions about the XGA,SXGA,XXGA!!!! And along with that, going out and finding all this information for me! Thank you so much! I havent met any of you so generous people out on the net. It's been a while, a little nostalgic if you know what I mean.
