Hmm Ceenda, they don't look like arrows to me. I guess you see now what I mean with "too sketchy", hehe.

This'll be up to spooge to clean up I reckon.

Err mate no offense but I've yet to come across rain that isolates itself to a 10 metre radius.

Except, of course, when I leave the house, and it rains only on me.

The good thing about a pic as such is: a lot of things are restricted to your own imagination. You don't know why and where, you're only seeing an elusive shot that shall give you an impression of what's going on, but you can never be sure. What Sp00g3 is really good at, all technical skills taken aside, is to mark the outlines of an ongoing scene and leave it to the viewer to "complete" it. The amount of details shown in those pics is high, but I'm sure it ain't higher for some reason. You could probably look at one of those great paintings and "let your mind wander", like someone once mentioned in his thread, talking about an illustrative piece of, dunno... whatever. So if you're seeing rain isolating itself to a 10 metre radius and you're still creaming your pants I don't think Mr. Mullins could be any happier than having you imagine a rain of arrows.

ARRRRRRH!

(Forget that ARRRRRRRRH! plz)

There is only one man to fill three pages of frenetic replies in a matter of houres: The Digital Art Legend - Craig Mullins. Those paintings again are pure storytelling in vibrant color.
Look at all the people Youre driving crazy with Your fantastic art (including me). That has to be pure satisfaction to all Your effort!

Thanks spooge for
: - new jeans (wine all over it + ziggarette ashes) - wacom (dropped it on the floor, cause my hands grabbed my skull) - eyeballs lost (simply popped out thru window. gone.) - jaw (hinge forced)

i dont even want to know for what or who those mindblowers are.

do you drink zauberdranke when you imagine this sort of _intense_ scenes ?
How much do you charge for a large poster ? I want to order a large poster !
A wide scapeview or something. 1 week. How much ?

Just wanted to say these are CLEARLY arrows, a few of them are more saturated, coming forward, and the first time I saw em I thought it was pretty cool they aren't all parrallel,
if it was rain Im sure spooge would have added the fog effect of the rain on the distance and also more of it on the battlefield etc etc, i.e. droplets on the nose of the fighter ..

I thought this one was going to get swallowed without much chewing. hmmm

As you know I type reeaall slow, I will respond to questions/ issues. If you replied to say simply "cool!", you have my thanks up front. Really! I do appreciate that you like them!

triggeron- the 1000 pixel size shows them pretty well, I think. As far as ref goes, I paused the braveheart DVD for head ref for the king, and the BG forest in h3 is just a photo on the left side. Other than that, no ref was used. Not enough time.

wycliffeart- I wish I had more time, and that I had done the layouts. I never really have been a fan of the fantasy genre, and I think these fall a little close to the tree, if you know what I mean. Something, anything to set them apart from piles of other stuff that all looks the same to me. The Brandywine school, which you may notice I like more, is just the same, full of it's own clichs, so it is just a matter of what you like.

jr- make it confident, leave it alone, even if it is wrong:)

noximad, no painter in there, it is too slow and the layers work in a non-standard way. Since these were to be animated, they needed to plug into AE.

hardcore, The one thing I hate about digital is not having daylight in the room. I wilt. But I work at night almost exclusively. No distractions or other "life" stuff to deal with. but working in the day makes doing darker images really hard.

kwillix, Um, I wasn't on the FF DVD. That was a fellow matte painter/illustrator Christian Scheurer. I never saw it. I did get the art of.. book, and they do not mention the ugly secret of matte art.

Heh, if you are ever on Maui, come to the Hui Noeau on wed 11-2 and draw with us!

Lunatique, yes, these were the first images I did with ps 7, so I went a little overboard with the fancypants brushes.

hey ed, I like the thumbnails best, too:)

Danny, it really slows my painting down to worry about how something will move or will be composited. And edges become very difficult to manipulate. And I like to cut shapes back and forth a lot as the image progresses, layers makes this difficult to control. On one I tried to paint it flat (a relief) and then cut it up and paint behind things, but that was a lot of smelly work in itself.

Bob, maybe that file was corrupted as you DL it? Try again.

flushgarden- The originals are 2-3k. maybe 4 at most. AS far as how to work at larger sizes, I answered that in the other thread, start as large as possible and then blow it up once it is blocked in. Cant imagine what requires 6-10k. Long pans sometimes.

As far as the BG in h4, yes, you are probably right that it isn't correct, but I just wanted to keep contrast on the main subject. These were done pretty quickly without a lot of tickling or finesse. As for liking the old work better, you could be reacting to the layouts not being organic with the painting style. I think you are seeing what I don't like about them as well. As I said, they work fine for their purpose, but that is about it.

that motion blur is what I am talking about, focus contrast and I don't have time to paint rocks!

ceenda- yes they were fun to do, relative to other work, but not as much fun as doing your own stuff.

hey flat, glad to see you sticking around. I think you are funny. I really didn't know what to think till I saw your pictures on your site. secksy hell yes

duracel, I have posted some old ID stuff from time to time. It kinda came to the surface during the big move. I was early-mid 20's then. They told me to do something else so I did.

zakath- yes, I agree. to fast, layers ugh. In the animated version, the sword goes through the body, so it is on a different layer.

gezstar, I really change in what I like. I would never have imagined liking Brandywine illustrations 10 years ago, and ID stuff (which I loved) makes me yawn a big one now. Right now, I like guys who can use line well and design with it. I am amazed cause I just can't do it.

sukhoi- I agree the photo BG and everything else does not fit well. If I had more time, I would have done something more organic with the BG. Yes, those are arrows to animated on a separate layer.

tetra. Photoshop

sup ben, connery and banderas? totally coincidental, but I can see it.

starglider2- what is zauberdranke? I have not given up on posters, just to busy with other more important stuff. Before long, I hope.

here are some of the boards

Hi Craig,
Intimidating, as usual.

"Zaubertrank="Magic Potion" in German. This is
what "Miraculix" the Druid cooks up when "Asterix and
Obelix" need some extra strengh to fight the Romans.

Wow where to begin. I'm soooo pissed at my self for missing this thread! You Sir Craig as you might know already, revolutionized digital art as its known today. I am sooo in love with the way you capture face expressions. One can imagine Sooo much emotion and secrets behind every character (even if you haven't intended that). I'm wondering about some things though. do you clone a lot? I know I do and manipulate it all with painting on top. That might sound wierd to some and they might think its cutting corners but I guess when you know what you're doing, all this does is make more room for more art. All I ever did was draw with pencil (some oil) and as I'm still trying 3d on for size I just can't get the level of detail I want with 3d. So I paint on top. All your work has been an inspiration to all young and old artists alike. This might sound silly but I couldn't sleep after seeing those images. I need a shot of whiskey now. Cheers to your long life and plenty of art! ... ps. We'd love to buy some posters of your work!

Damn, I bet the guy who originally penciled those boards was humbled as hell once he saw what you did in the final painted versions. I love the different approach you took to the one of the king and the throne room, makes the original sketches look incredibly weak by comparison.

Add this comment to the pile of "great work"s and "outstanding job"s. Still impressed.... Smile

Take it easy,
Malachi

Well Sir Mullins. One can only hope to one day meet a teacher of your caliber. I hope your ruthless self-criticism doesnt eat away at you too much.

Beautiful work as usual. All goes into my overflowing Mullins folder.
