bansq thanks, I wish I had a pocket mirror I use one like a3 size, I'm trying not to have to move my head and just look to either side where I place the mirror

I think there were some good ideas in that one, shame for proportions and still too shy with color, don t think the eyes are great but I feel I started to understand how to draw them, thinking about the eyeball for the curvature of the eyelids instead of trying to get the same 'flat' arc

todays portrait.......

fab: looks good, i like the purple you use on the the darker side of the face, i'm still not bold enough to put various other colors into my portraits. i also think you need a bit more contrast in the eye region. its a lot rounder in that region than this one shows, maybe a stronger light source would help.

zippzopp good sense of volume of the head, The nostril looks like its on the side rather than on the bottom of the nose (the hole of the nostril whatever it's called). you;re right the range of values I use is limited, I need to work a lot on that

Thorstein please post something soon, your portraits are kick ass, the one with scratchboard rake was very inspiring

Torstein Nordstrand: Thanks for the kind words. I hope all the practice will pay off but I have a horable suspicion that all heads I paint from now on will look like me Wink

edible snowman: Great expressions. I really like the second one

ZippZopp: Everyone seems to be doing b&w portrats atm Smile. You have done well with a dificult angle. Try putting some other colors like yellow and red into you self portarts. I know I am not a great on to talk when it comes to color but have a look at somebody like lucian freud and see where he puts color to make shapes. Done be afrad to put bits of yellow and red in you paintings as although you maynot have bit of skin that color you eye will mix them for you.

faB: I love the quick little sketches. Did you do them with your tablet as I find sketching with my tablet very hard. I like the way you are using the bruch strokes to convey form in the color one. Possibly the nearer eye should be a little larger and move left a little

don perkins: That seems very good for a first atmept. Painter is a paint to use at first but is fine when you get used to it.

Well I said I would do some value studies and here one is Smile

ChiaNi: Love that last one

ZippZopp: Scary lighting

edible snowman: You seem to have a very good feel for the shape of the face.

Sorry this one is a bit rushed and not so good

sorry just a sketch (Painter pencil brush), I couldnt paint it today, it felt like coloring instead of painting Sad my last attempts I was painting striaght from scratch, without 'boundaries' on the canvas -- but proportions are better in this one, probably my best

Hi all...

[insert obligatory first post stuff here]

Took me 45 minutes in Photoshop 5.5 using Wacom. It's my first attempt for a selfportrait and my first work using a mirror as well.

Haven't had time to sit and paint much more than speed paintings lately due to work, etc. and none of those are worth posting. Anyways, I had some time today and painted this based off this sketch that I did. Combination of Painter and Photoshop.
