Sad

I have a weird sort of color problem... I am not color blind. I can easily differentiate red and browns.. browns and greens..
I have a slight problem with Purple and Blue..
but when I stare at the colors for an extra 5 minutes it kind of blends into different colors.. and then I can differentiate between them..

Sometimes it takes a little while to identify the color.. I can see it properly.. but theres some problem there.. I can match colors pretty well.. but sometimes I can't..

I pass lots of color blindness tests.. but fail others.. sometimes I fail at color blindness tests that I passed before..

I'm confused.. waah..

any comments? suggestions? advice?

I was under the impression that color blindness was inherited... so intermittent color blindness sounds fairly scary. Either you're not taking the tests properly or it could be a serious health problem. The onset of cataracts or optic nerve disease has been known to trigger color blindness. In either event, a quick trip to the eye doc should nail it down. You on any medicine or something?

It sounds like you do have a mild form of colorblindness, which does have degrees of blindness. Some people have no Red/green receptors in their retina others just have less Red/green receptors. In rarer cases some people have fewer or no blue receptors. It sounds to me, from what you're describing, that you just have a little bit fewer red/green receptors than normal. Thats why you have trouble seeing the subtle addition of red in purple and so you have some trouble differentiating it from blue. You have less (or no) trouble with reds, oranges and browns because of their relatively larger amounts of red light. Do you have any trouble distinguishing aquas from greens or blues? If not, you have a very mild case and I wouldn't worry about it too much. Still, it couldn't hurt to have an opthamologist take a look. You never can be too careful with your eyes.

I have almost exactly the same problem...thought I was the only one! I just avoid using too many blues in my paintings...then I don't have to worry. Painting digitally makes it a bit easier, though--I can check the colours on the RGB sliders, and judge whether they are probably very blue or not.
