If any of you have any suggestions for adding something, please let me know, I'm curious to know what you think of this peice. _________________ girls like shining |

Drawing from your imagination can be a lot of fun, but if you really want to be great at it you should learn to draw from reality. When you draw say, an eye from your imagination you're drawing a symbol of what you think an eye looks like. If you want to draw a really great eye, you need to get a good photo of an eye or a mirror and really look carefully at an eye when you draw it. Eventually you'll undrestand the structure and form of an eye and be able to draw them well from your head. I promise you, if you spend as much time drawing from life as you do from your imagination your work will improve much faster. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. First of all how old are you? I'm 14 and you're telling me to STOP using my head. My art IS imagination, and telling someone how to do their art is just a joke. Secondly, drawing things as symbols is called symbolism if I can recall, it's what the ancient Egyptians did. Lastly, I did use a photograph to do this, except I altered the photo of the human, so I don't see where you're going off with your idea. _________________ girls like shining |

I agree with Inspector Lee..
Imagination is great.. its even better when you know how to draw what you are imagining.. He never told you to stop using your head. By having an attitude where you tell people that their advice is a joke is close mindedness.. so use your head and give honest advice a chance...
I like the concept.. its a bit like that Steven Spielberg movie AI .. I like it.. great colors so far.. Can't wait to see it completed.. |

I would never tell anyone not to draw from their imagination, I do most of my drawing from my imagination. (what I said was try to draw as much from life as from imagination) And yes, the Egyptians drew very symbolic art. If you look at it it's quite flat. What you drew (at least in the face) isn't flat and symbolic looking. I assumed you were attempting a 3 dimensional fairly realistic look, and my comments were based on that.
I understand that you are only 14, but if you ask for criticism you should expect (and want) the truth. Over my career I have taught art on and off, and I can tell you that artists (of any age) who seek out and try to learn from criticism of their work rather than defending it, improve Much, Much faster. But if you don't want my criticism in future I will certainly not inflict it on you, and I'm sorry if I hurt your artistic feelings. _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. "My art IS imagination, and telling someone how to do their art is just a joke."
I think you've misunderstood what he said. he wasnt saying that the idea of this image is wrong. But he mean that what is supposed to look realistic in this picture isnt realistic enough. Try to draw from life more (not photo), then you'll get better, then you'll express your imagination easier, and let others to understand you better.
On the other side, if youre doing ABSTRACT arts then most of the thing Inspector Lee doesn't apply, i think.
"Secondly, drawing things as symbols is called symbolism if I can recall, it's what the ancient Egyptians did"
A photo can be alots of symbols through MANY people's eye. But through a painters, artist.....'s eye, they them as shapes. This is why drawing from life is great, you see shapes. From photos, you'll have a hard time seeing shapes.......therefore you'll see lines instead....which is bad.
What Inspector Lee said is extremely accurate and its not just his idea, but it's also the idea of greatest artist in the world. I'll save his post to my HD. |

yes, I understand now what you meant, and I apologize for being rough on your advice. I'll try to accept outside opinions and suggestions more openly next time. _________________ girls like shining |

Hey, Sorry if I came off too harsh. You're really quite good for your age. And it is a very tough thing. You have to be completely absorbed and passionate about what you're creating, and then somehow flip a switch in your head when it's finished and say, "O.K. now tell me how crappy this is".
I still struggle with it now. You're adopting the right attitude though, and in the future you'll be glad you did. In the end, an artist with a positive open-minded attitude towards criticism will always end up better than an artist with lots of skills but a lousy attitude towards criticism. I've seen it happen over and over. Keep drawing! _________________ Smokey, this is not 'Nam this is bowling. There are rules. |
