Very nice! Great detail, really nice lighting... although I personally don't like that particular aqua blue of the glowing sword its execution is very effective.
The expression is pretty cool, certainly has a 'Ronin' sort of temperament.
I found the background somewhat disappointing, perhaps I don't understand its significance... but to me it seems void and quite boring. It does however have a few nice shapes and the direction that these lead you in makes for a pleasing composition.
I like your brush strokes, although they don't feature heavily they certainly add a nice feel to the overall rendering. The 'warmth' factor is there... I'm sure you know what I mean.
Nice stuff, like Enayla said... it is great to see such variety and different subject matter. Keep it up! |

Totally rocking, the choice of colors is amazing.
Though (to me) his face looks a little off around the eyes/nose area, the lighting makes both his nose and eyes look really wide, perhaps even unproportionally so. Still, I'm not to judge wether it's a style thing or not, it just looked a wee bit strange when I looked deeper into the picture.
No less, ownage is plentiful in this picture. Outstanding, no less. |

Thanks for all the nice comments, everyone!
AdezJ- ya, I used my own photography for reference.
Enayla- I'm trying to expand beyond just ethereal beauties. Next, I think I'll tackle some landsacpes and architecture stuff, but I still have quite of bit of unfinished stuff to finish first.
Lolion- it's probably just my bad drawing skills. I often don't notice these things until they are done.
Ian Jones- thanks for the crit. I'll try to sharpen my observation/aesthetics with each new piece I do. It's a life-long process, so be patient with me.
Thanks for the praises, everyone! |

Awesome Luna! I've been waiting to see this finished piece since you first posted the wip a while back
My only crit is that his tattoo doesn't really look to be on his arm. Something about it seems detached and slightly out of place, but I can't put my finger on it.
That's a minor detail though. Everything else is awesome, and I love the pose |

My Kingdom for your hair technique! I can't stop staring at it, it's breathtaking.
Love your site, you are one of the most complete artists I've seen, Photography, 3D, painting, Music, and you are a pro at all of them, seriously, my hat is off to you.
...now how about making a hair tutorial |

Jez- Thanks! Yep, the tatoo looks funny to me too, and I can't figure it out either!
FFNeX- Thanks man. Most people tell me to just concentrate on one. They tell me, "Jack of all trades, master of none." In a way they are right, as you only have so many years to live in a lifetime. I just thought I'd try everything I love to do and see if I can get away with as much as possible. Who said we can't try to be like the Renaissance guys?
As far as hair goes, I think Enayla and Seegmiller have both made excellent hair tutorials in the past. Just do a search and you'll find them. For me, it's quite simple:
1)rough out the basic shape of your hair masses.
2)paint all the strands in with darkest value.
3)paint on top of those strands with middle and lightest value.
4)go in and use all three values wherever is needed to show highlight/shadow.
That's about it really. No secret at all.

Awesome work, Luna! Perfect but Shouldn't the light have somekind of reflection effect on his left eyeball also? |

Hah, yeah, of course... I knew that... Your bad drawing skills, heh... It was so obvious I must of missed it *Laughs uncomfortably and tears up a random piece of paper*.

I really like the sense of impending action you have going in this picture. The faint "streak" on the end of the scabbard is a nice touch. The hight contrast color scheme adds a lot to the mood. It makes me think of the conflict between physical power (earthy, warm colors) and mystical power (unnatural blue-green), like he's about to unleash a glowing can'o'whoopass, but is reluctant to do so. Nice work! |

Great work man! dynamic composition, dramatic lighting, kickarse fighting pose rocks, lovin it.
Only suggestion really is maybe play some more on your materials, as they look lit quite samey (mostly in the green lit areas).
Some thin strandy tints and highlights on the hair, block of light (or shadow) on the blade as metal is usually higher contrasted with this kind of dramatic lighting, maybe some subtler rougher lighting on the garments.. probably would make it a little bit more interesting. But still great piece none the less! |
