For those just tuning in, I've been trying to get approval to make an online comic book version of the Chronicles of Narnia. After finally getting in touch with the CS Lewis company, I find out that I don't have permission to make the comic. I'm disapointed, but not to badly, there are other stories I can use (like my own) that I think could work out nicely.
Anyway, because Narnia is a bust, I've decided to release all of my sketches. But until those get scanned, here:

These were going to be the first two pages

looks great.. i like the varying ink weights establishing foreground versus background in the first page.. and the subtle play of light and shadow.. and the beautiful work on the characters.. [sigh].
too bad you can't go on with this. can you share any information about your own stories? or show any concept sketches ?

Damn them, I would have really liked to see the rest of this. I loved that series, and you have a really cool style. Good luck on whatever project you decide to do instead.

Matt.. see the problem here is if they gave you permission to do anything with it online it would be the same is givig you permission to make money using there properties , they would have to get lawyers involved . It just like the starwars universe ...you dont go asking Lucas film for permission to do things because they will tell you NO ..but if you just do it and dont try to make money from it ...they dont care in fact they like the free publicity ..Narnia is such a dead license you would have never heard anything from them if you wouldnt have asked...just do the comic trust me you wont ever hear anything about it unless you start trying to make money ...its basically fan art with a story right???.think about it..

BY the way the first to pages are great ...hope you decide to do it anyways

on the other hand, since they specifically said no, if he were to go ahead and do it anyways they could sue him for quite a bit, and since they have his email now they have a good idea where on the net to check....

bad idea.

awsome sketches. how much reference did you use for the buildings\scenes, matt, if at all? (just curious) .. and if you're passionate about doing this comic and do not intend on charging for it, fuck. do it.

something tells me that you wouldnt mind trying something else, anyway, though. the effort might be more worth your while.

I wanted to see that so badly.

look at the bright side... once you decide what you'll be doing next you'll wonder how you could have ever wasted time on anything else...

looks great by the way

Were you going to pay for their license or was this something you were trying to do for free? You might have better chances if you offered to pay them, unless the license is tied up with other companies (which might be another reason for refusal). Of course paying for a license is no small feat I'm kind of wondering why they turned your offer down.

I gotta say, this is some really great art. I'm a huge fan of your work (yeah, you got a fan ), and I hope we get to see some more comic stuff from you soon, very soon.

Good luck,
Brian H.

liv- as I understand he wanted to make a free comic, and to pay them so he could do something that he would make no money from would be.... an unusual business practice

this is probably why they wouldn't allow it:

This is nice stuff, Isric. Drawn with confidence. My humble opinion is that you'd find more satisfaction doing your own stuff, rather than trying to adapt a book.
