gahhh i can't think of a title.

like the title says, i finished this tonight, i'm so proud of myself because it's the first painting i've finished in months. i don't know exactly what it is, but i think it's a girl in france, in the future somewhere, she got stood up by her date and is waiting around in the back of a theater. my color scheme was inspired by a few portraits by john singer sargent, one of my favorite dead artists.

she was painted in photoshop, and between a sketch and the painted version, it took me about 15 hours. it would be cool if you told me what you think

It's very dark. Almost in an empty kind of way. But that's not necessarily a bad thing, now is it?
I really like the colors in the face. Very nice. But I think the color scheme gets a lot sloppier and more... well.. boring on the other parts of her.
I think that you're lacking some composition elements. Perhaps just one more element would be enough. Som thing behing(Or perhaps in front) of her. Something that defines the space.
I keep coming back to that face. I really like it. But I can't shake the feeling that something is a bit off. Can't put my finger on what though. But it's a very living and beautiful face, in an empty and dead(?) kind of way. She looks really like she's been stood up. Very good.

All my critique is just nit-picking. It's really a quite lovely picture.

The pic has a really cool mood. Although details could be better anyway it's cool :-)

2 Basse_Ex:

Dark? Yes. But... why not? I think the colors are good there. They express the mood of it.

anyway. I think it's a bit too dark. I don't know...first feeling was that I didn't see anything. her skin is very good, it's lighter than other parts...as clothes. I think this needs something to the background...but anyway, this is a very good piece!
(Actually, I don't like her eyes...looks like a dead people...)

HEY NOVA CABANA

hmm one crit. This looks ALMOST like a monochromatic painting in browns. Maybe a little more colour variety? Unless you really intended it to be this way.
Good mood ..

Super neat.. I like it alot. Do not touch the girl I say, yes its dark, yes its got no super-colorish areas.. but thats whats make this so natural.
Altough, I think that the legs on the thing she sits on are to short, It feels like that they shold be almost as long as her leg from the knee to the heels.

I like this one alot, great work, you captured a lot of feeling here.

I like it! You've improved a lot!

I think if you just pushed the darkest darks a bit darker, and the lightest lights a bit lighter, you've got it.

hehe cool cool pic nova..
i like the atmosphere and all.. but i think that it gets sloppy once it gets to the legs .. and i think the left foot (one on top) may be a bit off.. the way its positioned.. i dunno reali..j ust kinda bugged me.. but apart from that i love it.. good stuff.

I really like the coloring! I think using some reference you could make the face more convincing and painted. The face and expression are always the focus for a character painting. But it looks great-great color.

Mmmm.. gorgeous. Very well done. Like others have mentioned, you've improved a lot! I agree with most of the comments suggesting to pump up the the shadowns and highlights somewhat.

That's very nice Nova.
If you put some element in the upper right field i believe it'd look more balanced. Maybe a lamp post or something. I can't say why i think so, i just do. My monitor and yours are probably calibrated similarly, because it looks pretty good to me.

It's nice and mysterious. If you're going to paint with that contrast range, you could probably exaggerate the entire affair with some lost edges. I bet that'd pump the painting into orbit.

Beautiful and calm. You said it was all in Photoshop, sketch and all? I love the penciled quality. The colors work perfectly -- don't change it!

heh, i slmost forgot that i should reply to some of these comments.. it's customary, i suppose

yeah, the first time i critiqued myself after i finished thus far, i wondered if it was going to be TOO dark, and i guess it was. I had a heck of a time getting it to be the lightness it is, becuase it was even darker before. i'll definitely consider what you guys are saying.. your comments make a lot of sense, and some confirm what i thought may have been off in the first place.

all in all though, this isn't the vision i had for the painting in the first place [i was thinking more of rust-reds, mullberry, oranges and purples], but it works well i guess.. i have an entire lifetime to give it another shot

Little Bee - yep, photoshop sketch, photoshop painted. here's more or less what i started wif:

Absolutely BEAUTIFUL. I like the color scheme, I like your rendering technique, it's wonderful.

The only thing I'd mention are the eyes. There's something about the eyes. I think the irises are too big for the eyeballs? And that there is not enough detail and depth in the rendering of the eyes? Just my first impression... Other than that, I think everything is just gorgeous.

Nova, I really like this painting. It took awhile for it to load so I read most of what you had to say about it before I saw it. I think it fits on all ways but one . . . I don't think she should be looking at us.

The loneliness is the biggest underlying feeling in the painting, and for me, you dampen this feeling when the girl looks at the "camera". Her distance from hapiness would be complete if she wasn't pulled out of it some by looking at us.

less clothing, mo' flesh, plz

other than that very tastay, but something bothers me about her eyes. I'm not sure if she's just high on crack or sad like hell. I guess a depressed person would rather look down to earth than directly into the eyes of teh virtual beholder.

This turned out really nice Nova. I love the colors and the clothing. I always thought you designed the niftiest costumes. If you ever get in to fashion design, send me a catalogue. *grin*

My only crit is that she doesn't look very lonely. Perhaps she could be a bit more sad? But then, none of that would matter if I hadn't read the title or the description. It still looks beautiful as is

You've improved a lot.
