Like the title suggests this is my first oil painting. When Lunatique posted his "painting under a hundred bucks" thread I went out and spent under a hundred bucks. It is for a class assignment but I had to buy the oils. (High School assignment btw)

I would really love critiques, as I could use them badly. I was trying (trying is the key word) to work with modeling the form rather than worry about the features. Also trying to think about warm and cool colors.

my own self critiques would be that I usually don't look dead, I had trouble keeping the colors "clean" and got lots of mud. I also need to work on my craftsmanship A LOT. I have learned a lot but I need to put it into action. So Please help me out. Thanks!

ok got that little hosting problem out of the way. And a little additional info. I am going to be applying to colleges next year so I NEED to get in a position where my work will allow me to be accepted. So thanks for all the help.

Not meaning to be harsh, but you would benefit from a lot of practice drawing faces (pencil or whatever) before trying to tackle such a complex object in paints. Proportions and shading are a long way off.

But keep at it.

There's a certain fresh feel to the rendering technique that I like, and a certain attitude in the pose that I like. I think you have some real potential.

But, yes, the proportions are somewhat off. Don't feel bad, just keep practicing. You will get there! There are some excellent drawing and portrait drawing books out there that will help you improve dramatically!

Sumaleth- that is probably exactly what I needed to hear. I find painting to be a lot more fun than drawing so I migrate even though I am probably not even ready for it. It can't hurt though can it?

Grab a George Bridgman book or an Andrew Loomis Book.

Read, stare, and study. Draw off of them. You'll be amazed at how fast you can improve.
