puttin this on the back burner, so it's finished... for now. the work that remains is going to be tedious and take a while and i'll need a bit more spark before i start that up again. besides... i kinda like leaving some parts "unfinished", at least in this one...
just posting this here to see what kind of response i get. just joined up on sijun tonight, known about it for a while... never really paid attention to the forums until now. i'd like to start becoming active in my free time.
by the way... this is my first real painting i've really put any time into, if that matters.

the face is kind of wacky, how about posting the photo reference? that way people have a little something more to base their crits and comments on. |

Nicely done, and welcome to the board! Just to warn you, some people here may request to see a photo ref. Not me though, I couldn't care less. Good job and again, welcome.
Edit: Heh, you see what I mean?

sorry, i dont like to commend people on works well duplicated (or shittily duplicated as is most often the case). i merely suggested it to louis so that the curious majority wont just skip over his image.
this isnt in any way shape or form an insult to you, louis. |

ive never understood why people have the need to duplicate an image in this way, simple method is to just copy & paste. |

I'm not sure what you are going after here. If it's just an exercise in practicing your rendering technique, then there's nothing to consider except:
1)you followed the photo 100%. Congrats, you made a copy of a photograph.
2)you didn't do a good enough job and there are parts that didn't look right.
Other than that, there isn't much to say.
BUT, if you were to have used it as a starting point, and then painted an INTERPRETATION of the photo, you would've opened up a lot more room for critique and comments. |

Too those who replied negativly-
He said it was his first painting that he had put time into. Take it easy on him.
Painting from reference is a good way to learn about a lot of things from colors to lighting.
About the painting -
I think its a real good start. Some of the parts are a little off from the refereence and they stand out, but overall nice job. |

I think its all about the pic you used which I think is awesome - fleabrain always copies from pics (mostly of his friends and family)
and everybody's like good job - or I love the feel of this one - and the mood in this ones great. I think you did a good job and a few people are just making a big deal about it because they are uncomfortable with big breasted hot chicks. |

How is this any different from dixters pic that he just posted about his uncle and his uncles daughter?
trash this guy cuz he paints nearly an exact image from a photo-ref and praise dixter when he does almost the same thing.. all thats different is the hand has changed position....
I think this guys art for starting out is alright. Dixters is cool too. |

"hey, why draw from life when you can just snap a photo? "
Heh, I learned alot of things when copying photo, i dont do it for the sake of trying to duplicate it.

Ok...Well...i personally think this is great.
Drawing from life is actually the bomb.My visits to London UK actually really inspired me alot as an artist.
Having those artists everywhere that will do a portrait of you, they become so good at it that they can get a really close likeness of the subjects in a very short period of time. |

the original plan was to "finish" it and then keep it around for another week or so and keep working on it. obviously i never got to the finish part... this is still pretty sketchy in a lot of places. and uh... yah, this is my first painting and yes i'm trying to get my shit together with this tablet that i've never used before.. so get off my fuckin balls. learn to read and respond accordingly... christ.
i hope this place isn't full of this "it's a game i gotta win" attitude... |

this can be good practice. you've messed up the structure of the cheek a little, but your picture is on the banner at gfxartist for quality art so someone likes it. |

Penny for thought.
The best way to become a writer is to start with other peice of work and develope your own style.
He is simply painting a picture.. maybe a paint over, but it is somewhere to start.
Give him a little credit.. and time..
Be incouraging.. This isn't a place to bash people.. unless they really deserve it. |

yeah, we all love people who are too elite for themselves. Good work louis, there's nothing wrong with this. doing everything is good practice. even if some people are too good for everything younger artists want to post for learning purposes. |

I didn't bash the guy, I only told him that it's hard to C&C an exact copy of a photo. It either looks like the photo or it doesn't--not much c&c involved. He could judge for himself whether it looks like the photo or not.
Maybe I should've added that for his first real attemp, it's a good show. |

What? How ridiculous. The best way to master any art is to study the basics FIRST and then move on. This dude hasn't studied anything at all, much less the basics.
And then when people give him the criticism he asks for, he tells them to get off his balls. Not the best attitude for a newbie.
BTW, that is one hot chick.

i got a good laugh out of this one. somehow he has, from the only digital painting he's seen from myself (considering it's my first and only one), concluded that i haven't 'studied anything at all, much less the basics'. what's better is that he's taking someone elses rational about developing a style and comming up with some assbackwards statement that doesn't make any sense in context of anything on this page. basically... it sounds like you're saying i've never picked put a pen to a piece of paper before, which is nothing other than completely ignorant.
and the best is that i'm a newbie. i'll just assume you're talking about these forums, because i'm sure you wouldn't have the odacity to be saying otherwise had you have seen anything else i've done. |

Seen anything else you've done? According to you, this is your first painting. What other conclusion might I draw other than you've never done any others? That makes you a newbie. I can only go off of what you yourself have stated.
And for your "first and only" painting, you've chosen to copy a photograph pixel by pixel (I assume you used the medicine dropper to pick your colors?) rather than practice form, values, and color. This illustrates that you have not bothered to study the basics because anyone who had would a) have more paintings than just one and b) have done a better job on a painting than this.
So yes, I have the audacity to call you a newbie. If you're not, then I hope your other work is a lot better than this. |

wow.. this has turned into quite the flame war... ease up guys.
Louis: I realize you are new around here but one thing you gotta know is that 'Sijun' people have sorta developed an attitude towards 'newbies'. Just a note, be precise.
As an example, if you duplicate a photo, make sure you post that fact and the original photo... It seems to me that you've made no bones about the fact that you were working from a photo so I dont really see why everybody is getting uptight.
Perhaps post some of your sketches and traditional media.
-cheers. |
