Hey, good morning everybody.

I have a question. I am from germany and a great riddle here is the difference between Hip Hop and Rap. There are some rumours going round, that Rap is darker and more brutal than Hip Hop. Perhaps you can tell me.

Thanks

Hiphop is the music. Rap are the vocals associated with Hiphop. It's that simple

I dont completely agree... im an 'inner city youth' as well, and though i've done shitloads of grafitty, i dont listen to, or consider myself, hiphop in any way. There definitely is a special subculture associated with hiphop music, but the title 'hiphop' still only applies the music itself, that music being synthetic hiphop beats, samples and rap vocals.

I guess everyone has his or her own defenition of these terms... oh well.

Hip Hop is no more than title given to the style and sound of New York and New Jersey subculture. It is no more than the type of clothing, slang, and persona, that is cliche to the east coast. Recently the title Hip Hop has been adopted to events like freestyle, and NY fashion. Those who are fascinated by Timberland boots, Lugz, Fubu and such are Hip Hip.

Rap is a different story and a whole different persona. Most true rappers (example-Will Smith is not a rapper)
are not out for the Hip Hop caliber. They are there for the love of the music and trying to reach their audiences and money of course! But not for the Hip Hop fashion show. Most real rappers come from the slums of the ghetto which motivated them to rap and express. Point is you can find rappers in starched jeans, beanies, rags, of whatever. And that ain't Hip Hop!

Spitfire had it right. Hip-hop is the musical style. Rap is what you do, i.e. the vocals associated with the music.
