I posted in work in progress, didn't get much of a response, but still got some great crits from Frost. If you're reading this, did I achieve the Fresnel effect? Oh and I added the green tones into the background and I think it really helped.
Sorry about the messy arms and legs, it's just that I'd reached the point where you just want to forget the pic and move onto something else.
Any crits would be helpful though, and I will keep them in mind for future images.
EDIT: Here is the link to my previous version posted in WIP. http://jasoncentral.virtualave.net/MECH.JPG

I think that is really cool! The concept is sweet (I like his exhaust ports) and the rendering of the head torso area is very good...to me, a complete finish is a toss up (particularly if your tired of it). Personally, I would add it to the portfolio and move on...I think it is "resolved", if not completely "finished"...I hope that makes sense. The only thing I would add (for reference on future pics ) would be that his arm anatomy seems a little funky, paricularly where the upper arms connect to the shoulders. It seems the shoulder joints should roll up toward the viewer a bit more to coincide with angle the arms are at. The back-light/glow is well done. Rock on!

Hey, the design here is awesome.
I almost never do paintover (because I have no clue what I'm doing anyways), but I decided my point would be best shown (rather than described). I tried to tighten up the design on the legs and arms a bit. Made them bigger, more detailed, and better for uh, whatever robots do.
Hope you don't mind me doing this. Not that my paintover is an improvement anyways O_o

Woah! Beautifully designed robot dude! I can see this being perfect for a game poster, all you have to do is slap the text in the bottom of it......ok....i'm babling again. Sorry. |

Hi everyone, thankyou very much for your replies
cptoonz: I think the label, 'resolved' but not 'finished' is a perfect way to describe where I am with this pic. You're right about the arms, I am quite unhappy with them. I think more planning in the initial stages will prevent things like this in future.
Duncan: Thanks, I don't know if it'd be diesel though, but I see where you're coming from. I didn't really think about how it'd work. Maybe he has an internal combustion chamber or something like that?
Cicinimo: Awesome Your paint over is more than welcome and I really love what you did with the arms and legs. It's really changed the way I look at the pic!
Dr Bang: Thanks! I lurk a lot here and at Lumental and some of the work you've posted has been excellent |

Haha, reminds me somewhat of Majin Buu, only not big, pink, and gay. Good job! |

very cool Jason! You've really made tonnes of progress with your painting from your earlier work. I think the light source is abit undetermined but still it looks good. Maybe some of the dark edges/outlines like around the head and some other areas are flattening it a little tho, try subtleing them out. Also I think the waist coud be cast in more shadow.

Beowulfthefallen : Majin Buu?? Isn't he some pink alien thing in DBZ? Hmmm... I don't see the connection. hehe, thanks anyway.
Cos: Thank you! The flattening thing was one of my largest problems with this piece. I have a tendancy to render everything flat. You're right about the light source, in future pics I'm going to try to have a more definite lightsource.
10ten: Thanks, but credit goes to Cicinimo for the great paintover
n8: Thanks nathan, yes the helmut does look very magneto-ish and generic. Next time I'm going to spent more time thinking about my design. |
