I haven't drawn anything in a long time.... it takes so long for me to finish pictures that I either don't start or don't finish. This was just something to get me going again.

the body looks slightly small and the neck also looks to thin (but then it is supposed to be a doll, correct? ) , but other than that i love it, so rich and contrasted |

hm. i assume this was exaggerated intentionally, but to do that correctly, you must know anatomy, otherwise it looks... weird. i've been learning a lot lately so i like to pass it on -
on your pic the head construction isn't right, and to see that, just flip the image horizontally. i have no time at the moment to do a head construction tutorial, but what also seemed wrong are the eyes and the nose.
when you construct the head, even if it's exaggerated, try following these lines. they are idealistic, but very helpful.the green lines show that the eye always starts right above the edge of the nostril. the space between the eyes is the same as the width of one eye. to get the width of the mouth, place lines from the root of the nose trough the edges of the nostrils, and you'll get it right. now, these ideal measurements, but try constructing the face and you'll see it looks a lot better.
next, the neck and the chests are wrong. they're drawn from the front view.
and for the hair and the hat... first construct the head correctly, then do other stuff. even the best drawn hat won't fix the wrong construction. i strongly suggest learning anatomy before drawing anything. it will be tougher to learn later. i skipped anatomy and it was a mistake, i must say. taking some time to learn it now before it's too late. learn! you won't be sorry later.
p.s. sorry if i've been rough/negative in this post but my english is still rusty |

paste the ref pic in the new layer and stretch it. then decrease the opacity. it's a good way to see if you got the proportions. i used that when i started working on the pc.
another thing, when you work from a reference, it's not like you just have to copy it. putting your own touch in it makes it look better. simplify, leave something out, add something. make it yours. |
