OKay - the plastic is a bit scary, but Probus, you are kinda right - I think the raised eyebrow is dead-on.

But, in my opinion the post of Vampyroteuthis infernalis' self-portait is way scarier. That's a nasty looking foot or an octopus - the jury's still out over here.

When I first found this URL, I thought I found
something special. Since I have learned how
to use every painting software....it is sadly
obvious to me that at least 70% of you simply
scan in an image and "color by number" and
say it is your creation.
Take a drawing and painting class.
Don't think for one second that anyone will
make it in this competetive buis. by scanning
photo's.

hey catnip... you know that if you can use program really well and you\ve got experience with you wacom or mouse... then it's not hard to draw in photoshop or painter as well or even better as on canvas or paper.. it's just another medium
i rarely scan anything and if i do then only sketch draw by me... mostly i start drawing in photoshop without even looking at any reference.

That's an interesting view catnip.
Here's the ref photo I used for my sketch. If you think I traced it perhaps you'd like to overlay the two in photoshop and convince everyone. I think using reference photos is the best way to work, and that many professional artists do that.

Perhaps however you have a better way. Why don't you show us your own self portrait. I couldn't help notice that you have no webpage listed in your profile where you show your own art, and that as far as I can see, you've never EVER posted any art on this forum - you only comment on other people's art. I'd like for you to show me how to draw a good self portrait, without photo reference, rather than telling me. If you can. Can you even draw?

Conor - Hehehe, I don't know if I dressed up as spiffy as you. I just threw a blue bath towel over my head

Catnip - that's a broad generalization. If you've learned 'every painting software' as much as you've claimed, you'd realize like m-703 said that you can closely mimic media of any kind. With that said: photo reference, whether used in photoshop, oil paints or pencil drawings makes it very easy to attain a realistic quality. I think I use photo ref for maybe 5% of my work. Even being part of your 30% demographic of 'non-color-by-number' artists I still say nothing chaps an artist's butt more than being called a hack when you're not. I'm sorry you don't think this place is something special.. there's a lot of great artists who contribute here, and where we will always value your opinion, not everyone values demeaning assumptions. Surf a few websites, see other works before you make such a bold statement that most everyone (70%) on here is cheating.

You are right about one thing though...
>>> Don't think for one second that anyone will make it in this competetive buis. by scanning photo's.<<<

Not that I feel the need to prove myself, but as you can see I made quite a few overall changes from ref to sketch like lighting and angle, etc.

-Flexible Elf

I'm not trying to start a flame war. Suffice to say, like I said before, I'm sorry you feel that way about sijun now, and I hope there's some way we can change your mind. I guess there's always paintch@t, where cheating is basically an impossibility.
