This image went through quite a while of work, put it away, work, put it away. I am not sure it justifies the time. The compostion is a little strange, but I like that. There are three big winches right in the middle of it! But I think in the end it has some kind of complex balance. Here is the first scribble. Don't know why I have that still around.

Amazing.
I actually got up and took a couple steps back from my monitor to view it properly. I would suggest everyone else does the same.
It's unbelievably realistic from about 5 feet away.
Feels like I'm on the boat with them.
Great work. I wish I could make a rougher style like this work. =/
Take it easy,

I told myself I wouldn't comment on this because I couldn't find a proper crit, and I already know you'll get a lot of praise. *grin* But I decided I'd pop in my 2 cents anyway since only a couple of folks have responded so far. This looks really great. I love these pirate images that you do, I guess I feel it's a really interesting subject matter that's often neglected.
I think I want to read those Sargent notes again so that I can learn to properly place shapes/forms with overly scribbling. You do it very well. It's inspiring

The atmosphere. Just love it. you've done excellent work with the sea also. If I have to neccessary crit something I would say the lining of the smoke with yellow doesn't work too well. It makes the smoke look a little bit flat. |

Love the lighting... love the water... think the composition is super and totally interesting...
The only crit I have is the sinking ship's rudder. It doesn't look like it's properly placed... looks a bit off-center...
So cool.... |

I kinda dig the winches in the composition too. Those waves and the lighting on the foreground characters are very nice. I also agree with fleabrain on the rudder, though I didn't notice until he mentioned it.
All in all another great piece, SD.

OH MY FUCKING GOD *jumps with joy*
You're stuff is very inspiring Mr. meat sack. A lot of respect! Did you use any reference for this piece? What about the last one where you had a similar setting with a pirate dude and a flock of seagulls flying around?
Anyway this piece is by far my favorite. Take the sea for instance, that area alone has such a large range in hue.. makes it real rich! You can almost see all the plankton and sea weed crap floating in there. I won't even go into the figures, your skills scare the shit out of me!
I'll be back when I get better than you!!!! You remember that!!

Hey, is this for commercial use? I don't remember seeing pic this detailed from you that you made just for fun. A strong piece all in all, and there's only one thing bothering me in the picture: the wave in the middle is too big, the secondary characters were too far up as were the reels (or whatever) in the foreground and this in my opinion breaks the overall composition, so I moved the top part lower and made the height of the image smaller.
Here's the pic. (I post this as a link, because the filesize is rather big) |

Very nice as usual spooge, maybe not as realistic as your usual stuff but still it's great. Trying to find a few things to crit here was a couple of thoughts,
The perspective of the pic seems a little unbalanced, the ship in the foreground has a looking from above view while the bg has a more looking from below view, which gives a kinda sinking impression to the foreground. Something about the bottom right area of the image makes it look even more like that.. Kinda unclear, maybe that bright blue/white adds to the confusion a little.
The bg seems a little flat also, like it could of got glazed over some more to add more depth between itself and foreground.
Anyway just some thoughts, be nice to know what you thought about them. Lets me know if my brain is going in the right direction |

Good lord, the one thing you continually manage to do just right in all these pictures is the radiosity. I also notice that you enjoy doing pirates - a very nice piece! |

One of the best things about your paintings..besides the lighting is your mastery of composition. Me and a freind where talking about composition and how really it is probebly the second most important aspect of a good painting besides a good sense of balance with lighting .. anyways very masterful painting !!
One thing I think you do very well is capture the moment in your paintings. Much like Norman Rockwell . I find a lot of people paint a scene as if it where posed but I find it truly masterful to be able to capture the moment and in that way you have really shown excellence!!
[edit](((BG )))i looked over your image and I did'nt think you really corrected any problem ( no offense ) In meat's painting it looks like the weight of the ocean is crashing and building up against the coast line and that there might be unseen rocks near the shore. It also has a sense of chaos like stormy waters. In your version it looks like the waters are calmer and they are not as near the shoreline.

Uh.... this struck me almost wordless, spooge.
I just realized how you've applied extra detail in the areas of light only, and you've left the areas of shadow on their own with only just a few strokes defining the value & colour in them... and it really works like the toilet in the train! I wonder how come I haven't taken note of this before.

This is really a nice piece of work Craig. I must say that the water is my favorite part, it is moving. Colors are great too!

I like the water, your really capturing a nice effect.
I think it would be cool to add some more people, like maybe some guys jumping off the sinking ship, or perhaps bobbing in the water.. The two guys look sort of alone..
whatever, your pirate series is great. More large bodies of water! they look nice. |

I know you don't dig kiss-kiss comments, and I usually don't like write'em. But, this is amazing.
Your art makes me want to try harder! |

I never really liked the whole pirate thing until I saw your paintings, very inspiring to say the least. Thanks for showing that prelim sketch, nice to know that the pros have to scribble out ideas too |

i love it! the composition must be my favorite part of all. you certainly captured the characters at a great 'relief-like' moment, which i find very awesome. great job on the hands as well. is that smoke behind the pirates on the left? that area is probably the only in question (besides the rudder). damn fine work! |
