Did this today from a very old pen and ink cover I did for a program for college production of Hamlet... It's fun taking old stuff and giving it new life

all comments welcome

Great stuff - the material looks like a Victorian fabric. Dunno if that's whatcha were aiming at or not, but it's very nice just the same :]

Hey, that's sweet! My only crit is that your bevel looks a little too harsh. It's making the pic look fake. Dunno if you're going for the fabric look or for a carved look, but a quick downplay and blur of your bevel edge should do the trick. Beautiful!

I shudder to think how long the rest of the alphabet is going to take...! ;}

grim- first off great job and it does look like metal despite what the second comment said.
that said, do you or anyone else have any advice on how to do good, historically realistic, scrollwork when drawing metal, stone, or wood designs?

Thx, I was going for metal

The way I did this was embarassingly simple. This was an old black ink on white paper line art I finally got around to scanning. All I did was cut the white out, put it on a layer above my metal texture and bevel it. I then overlayed a couple other textures over the letter only and tinted it.

The style I used for the letter was based on actual characters I found in a calligraphy book but is completely original as you might have guessed from the fish and the weasel thingy The sword was added as it was for Hamlet.

As for creating historically acurate scrollwork... I imagine good reference of the period's style and the material.

I don't imagine any of this is too helpful It's an interesting subject though.
