This is a 'quick and dirty' design/ink and CG, but its the general impression that counts, right?
That extra effort (timeconsuming tinkering with details) does rarely boost up the quality of an image more than a few percent, atleast not for me. I don't think I got patience to spend more than a few hours on a pic anyways...
Anyhow... crits welcome. Am I using too many highlights perhaps? How's the color choice? Do I use proper values for the halftones? Bad lightsourcing?

wow, i like it a lot dude. only negative thing i can say is that the lines a a little too thin, you can't see em very well in certain places. prolly just cause the image is resized from a bigger version but you get the idea |

Awesome work.. an interesting combination of color too. That gritty stuff on the knee looks out of place though. |

Hi ANJ-77! I like the mech design alot. The colors you have are great. but some how It looks like you had some difficulty deciding how or where the light sources are coming from.
The Specular highlights bouncing off the armor seems inconsistant. At first i thot mebbe the main light source is coming from behind it and above, and also to its right. Judging from the "specular highlight" of its right elbow area. I thot the light was located further back. If that is so.. The its left forearm area shouldnt be luminated like that.. and it should be more in the shadow of its torso. As it is now.. the Left forearm seems totally exposed to the (sun?)light and my eye tends to be directed there.. whereas i think somehow the emphasis should be focused more towards its head and chest(but i cant give u an answer as to how u can go about doing that).
Okay now for the conflicting lightsource. Notice the shadow cast by the right shoulder onto its right side of the chest? That area seems to now tell me that the light source isn't the same as the one thats causing the specular on its elbow.. cuz it's like its not as far back. This kinda confuses me.
Also if the light source did come from further back.. wouldnt its lower left leg be better lit? As it is now.. its like in deep shadow.
Sorry for being nitpicky. But when u mention whether it had "bad lightsourcing?" I kinda took a closer look and analyzed it alittle more. hehe.. hey u did ask.. Erm dont be mistaken.. I really do like this piece. And i love to see effort put into art. And i really do see it here.

damn. thats really good
but, since you asked....maybe there are a few too many highlights. Seems as if everything there reflects light like a mirror, whereas the 'scuffing' (for lack of better word) on his knee says that he may have seen a bit of action, and so his armour might not be hot-off-the-production-line squeeky-clean, know what i mean?
yes, extremely nitpicky, i know - but you did ask |

Wow, I really like it. The design is awesome and colors are great too. I think the highlights look fine. It doesn't appear as though your going for something super realistic so I think it adds a nice touch. Also the power packs or lights on the chest are very cool. I love it!!! |

That is a very cool one. Nice color.
I just think he would look better when his eye is lil bit smaller and less bright.
maybe the outlines should have more substance too, but i think that is just a question of taste. I think i would like to see the mecha on a nice BG.
Will yu make a BG for that Pic? |

Awesome, I really like the drawing and coloring. Maybe you could add some dirt, rust and texture to the armor to make us believe he's made of metal or whichever metal he's made of.-Great job.

Fantastic illustration, it reminds me of a lot of mecha drawings I've done in the past, I just love that genre.
Just one thing I can point out, which should help: When coloring, try to make your cuts a bit less soft, otherwise the texture of the armor looks closer to plastic than metal.
Beautiful touch on the rust on the thigh, by the way. |

Popsockz: The lightning was made in a separate transparent layer above the lineart and color. The stipes were made in an layer above the color layer (overlay mode).
geo: You want fatter outlines? I prefer quite thin inlines and really fat outlines. I believe that you shouldn't rely to hard on lineart though (like Marvel art does). The colors/shades should define most of the form, not the lineart. This is prolly personal preference though...
Duke: Thx
Nova: I started out with brown colors, but I thought it looke funny and hueshifed it to blue. I used Yellow for the lights because blue and yellow works well togather, and blue+yellow is also the colors of the swedish flag.
Yes, that gritty stuff was supposed to be used all over the armour, but I didn't feel like spending time on doing so, that's why its quick and dirty...
oneiros: hehe, unfortunately I can't do much better than this, cuz I'm too lazy to spend much time on my pics. This means I have to work up speed instead, so I can do a 'finished' piece in a few hours. It's all about practice and repeats.
Laemtao: Yes, the lightsourcing is somewhat inconsistant. The light is meant to come from fron-up-left (and from the gun). However, as an artist you have the right to sacrifice some of the realism in exchange for detail exposure. I'm afraid I'm not that good at it though, I keep putting the highlights at the wrong places.
I think I once got a crit saying that I use too many 'unsupported highlights' and thus making the image 'bounce and chatter', but I just can't resist adding highlights!
Hmm... but for every piece I do it's getting more apparent to me that I must resist. I also need to start sacrifying detail exposuse in benefit for realistic shading...
simu: :F thanks, but it's harly the level I strive for.
leat: Yes, you're right, I answered similar posts above...
Imhotep: Yah, those are plasma vents or something. I like using anatomical referenced in my desing, ie. transforming muscles into mechanichal parts.
n8: I started this pice some time ago, but I stopped halfway cuz I got bored and I thought it was to sloppy.
I never ink using the comp, I like to have as few 'layers' between me and the painting. It's more intoutive.
poxen: I inked the shetch...
Rand: Yes, lineart is a subject of preference, I personaly prefer thick outlines and quite thin 'inner lineart'.
A BG... I dunno, like stated earlier, I'm very lazy when it comes to finishing pics.
jc: I was gonna add some 'wear and tear', it looks very cool.
scoop: cuts=gradiations? I used the airbrush quite much on this piece, normally I use a more painty 'hard edged' style. I was going for a more toyish look here tho.
Thanks for the crit ppl! It's funny how my style is defined by my flaws. |
