Here's just another personal project done on stolen time that should have been spent on paid stuff.

Sweet as usual. The only question I've got is how does this cool bike turn to the right? That swing arm holding the front wheel in place will physically prevent the wheel from rotating right.

i like this one alot, my only problem with it is the arch of the lower back, it looks kinda stiff. maybe next time you could bend it back alittle bit? the wheeles are kick ass though. |

adi, you are the king of textures
I love the costume and bike design. They're fantastic. And umm... dangit, you make it so hard to give useful critiques. |

Thank you very much on the kind words. I am not skipping anyone for any mean reasons but am replaying to questions I feel need answering.
Pat I know that in this perspective the steering doesn't make sense but it does in my head. It is based on an actual steering system used on italjet scooters. Mine is beefier and more rugged for the design's sake. Here's a pic,
Fallen, I really dig your stuff and say screw my tutorial, you have a great thing going. I love that last piece you did.
jr, I can see where you're coming from with the back, but the jacket is heavily reinforced and stiff. It actually has that ribbed part in the middle to make it bendable to an extent.
Once again thank you all.

Really nice design. Two things stand out in my mind:
1. Is the front wheel a little small or am I just stuck on the Tron Light-cycle design? It just feels a little unbalanced to me like the front tire is the mini-spare tire. I'm just being picky...
2. What if you tinted the background to a color that accented the bike and rider like a muted rust tone for instance? As it is, the grey background diminishes the bike and rider since it's so close to the greys in the costume and on the bike.
Otherwise, it's beautifully rendered and feels very solid. Profile shots tend to flatten out, but the bike has great mass.( I think tinting the background would emphasize that even more)
Really nice. |

adigra,
Wow! That is high-tech! Thanks for sharing the pic; it makes more sense to me now. Forward all my comments after "Sweet as usual" to dev/null. I guess I'm still rooted in the old skool when it comes to bike steering.

Hi Adi, once again.. a beautiful piece of concept art. I really like how u explained that new steering system that actually exist!! (wow) And I am really glad that u are still here posting at sijun what with that whole fiasco going on with Lumental ..blah blah blah yadda yadda yadda .. i dont want to restart the topic here as well ..
Well Anyways, that aside, i have one small crit on your pic that i thot i'd mention, Isn't the right handle bar located a bit off? i mean i think it should be abit higher since its steering to the left.
And forgive my ignorance, but what is it that she has on her back? Just curious. I really like the way u mix futuristic and retro styles in your work. That head gear(Helmet?) reminds me of what a biker from the 40s/50s would wear. :P

Laemtao: The steering isn't a conventional straight fork and it consists of multiple joints which allow for the horizontal movement of the handlebars. I am not sure what the benefit of that is but it's the way it works, hmm... The alternate systems like that have been around for many years but aren't used too often although they prove superior in many aspects.
I don't really care to go into the whole other forum debate as I know nothing about it, I rarely read the random musings. Whatever...
burnout, thanks man. I'd still like to hear what you were gonna say but didn't.
Oh yeah, I forgot. The thing on her back... Well, she's a delivery person, mailman (woman) of a sorts. The backpack is a self powered cooler hence the mechanical look of it and the gadgetry. I'd imagine the thing sticking out in the back would be a rechargeable powerpack and it's exposed for cooling purposes, uh... or something like that.

I'm with Fallen, I tryed your tutorial too and when I applyed the water color to my pencils, I screwed the whole piece over. Oh well, it works for you and it's your style so that's all that matters I guess.
Great stuff again.
Keep up the good work and so one and so forth.
Take it easy,

Very cool design, for some reason I think it could be the Hayabusa of the future, just a few questions I don't think got posted.
What about night driving, I don't see a place for the lights? unless it's that triangle marking you have, it's the future so I guess her helmet could have some type of nightvision.
Oh and no windshiled?? better be no bugs on the street or they splatter all over..lol and just being picky here, how does she look while she is tucked into the bike and how do the aerodynamics of the bike work?
Are you doing this for the dadeolopolis (probably just destroyed the name) project? |

Thank you ! Besides proving this forum with great art for my eyes, you managed to answer a few technical questions for me too
I was wondering if you'd need the space the size of a parking lot to turn with this kind of machine :
I know nothing of bikes even tho my ex still raves about Ducati all the time.. All I know is how I like riding them
One other thing : I absolutely *love* the retro look. I don't know if that's what you're trying to provide in your work but it makes me wonder about steampunk and all that WW2 references for getups or textures. And yet sleek and futuristic design. Yowza !

egerie, wow, that's a sweet bike, haven't seen that one before. I have kind of a small library of pics of concept bikes and such so I'll have to add this one. I love the wheels, awesome. I have never ridden one of these alternative steering system bikes and can't say what the turning radius is but I'd imagine it would have to be wide.
As far as the "retro look" goes mi can't say I was exactly aiming for it but I do love "the future that never was" look to things and am inspired by it. Just like Blade Runner, a vision of an appocaliptic future from the past that never happened. So everything is worn out and decaying. I love that stuff.
Laemtao, I like your story for the character much better than my description and, since this was inspired to an extent by Mad Max movies, it fits perfectly.
As far as the lights go I tried a few different variations which I didn't like, so I opted for form over function as it is only an illustration. If I choose to pursue this I will give it more thought. But the point is completely valid. |

egerie,,, thats the bike I always think of when I see this kind of design.. I have old magazines and I think that came out in 1993 or 1994.. It was the coolest thing I eversaw. I gotta dig it up.. I know there are some cool spec's on it. Like Hydrogen power plant etc..
Adi,, Love it.. |

Thanks Adi, for clearing up the steering fork puzzlement i had. And her backpack story does make kinda sense.
But instead of a delivery person like a mail man or a regular despatcher.. (she looks too cool for that) lemme indulge a little (hehe) and perhaps give her cooler story for her premise. She seems to look like a courier of sorts, set in an era of a post apocalyptic conflict which resulted in the extinction of reliable communication system, albeit telecommunication or the traditional "snail mail" option. Sort of like the story of "The Postman" (the Kevin Costner movie) but set into a more steam punk era. These couriers popped up to serve a demand for fast secure and reliable delivery service. Hah.. boy did i ramble. Sorry.... didnt mean to.. erm Ignore above paragraph.
About what n8 said,
quote
Quote: |
...she looks like shes holding th bike between her legs..i think its to do with the bike being abit too small at the wheels or sumthing..but they dont seem to line up right with her feet..??. |
I dont think how her feet was placed was or that how the bike seems to be floating in mid air was wrong or off perspective. I think that since there was no drop shadow and nothing to give a sense of a "floor" gave it that illusion. Maybe a little touch up on those parts would help? I like your back ground alot too Adi, but what Breakboy said about "tinting the background to a color that accented the bike and rider like a muted rust tone" does have some merit.
And lastly.. i can't believe i didnt catch it earlier and Vgta did bring it up. How does she navigate in the dark? As for Vgta's remark for a windshield, most racing bikes that have a little windshield, it doesn't serve as bug deflector haha.. Its too small to be effective at all.. unless its as huge as what the cop's use on their patrol bikes. Most windshield for racing bikes are more for aerodynamics and aesthetics isn't it?
Gee... i think i wrote enuf today.. thats it.. word limit exceeded. Shan't post till next week

I really like this. What do you think about that white line going around her and the bike though? I think this image would be stronger if you made the rider and bike have some relationship to the space surrounding them. What do you think? Your plans for the image might make sense of that line. |

Bumble~
That "white line" around the girl and the bike is used in comic book art all the time, it's called an "Aura". It's used to separate characters from eachother, objects, backgrounds, etc.

Hmm I never knew that the name of it was aura, interesting. I don't usually do that in my work but I wanted to make this one a bit more graphic looking and that seemed to do the trick. It's not a scene I was illustrating but a depiction of the rider with her bike. The background is only a graphic and compositional element, not exactly a part of the scene. It is a good point though, and something to think about.
Thanks
