Hi this is the first time I've ever posted here - I am amazed by the quality of work I have seen! - this seems to be the best board for work am I right?

This is me trying to create a way of producing realsitic drapes - there are no tutorials I have ever discovered on the net fot this!

It is pure Photoshop - I know its not perfect yet (and not entirely convincing - I did it a few nights ago) but the technique I'm sure could be used to produce much more realism. There is not really much airbrushing here - mostly it is done with texture mapping and lighting effects.

What do you all think? Potential?

Umm... Im not sure what to say...

It looks sort of drape-y to me.. but the lighting needs work. I bet you could almost use the airbrush or dodge and burn to make the folds deeper.

but im not really one to be answering this one.. I just didnt want to see anyone with no replies.

keep at it.

My quilt hmmm ..
yes well the lack of reponse I guess means that no-one likes it. It was just a kind of experiment. I know this board is mainly for "paintings" and maybe judged in that light it doesnt hold water. Its just a process really

oh well

Study how light falls on cylinders and cones, then look at real drapes.

As the drape goes to the top, the radius of the fold decreases. This is simple, but where it hits the ground you should study the real thing, then understand in the abstract why you see the values you do, then you can do it out of your head. Try to do just the forms first, the pattern makes it a lot more complex.

This looks really neat and im betting it was a worthwihile experiment. The texturing of the drape and the top 3/4 look really good to me, its just the last 1/4 that perplexes a little. judging by the weight and dimensions of the drape in the top part it doesnt seem realistic that it would kind of swirl on the ground in this manner. I think a crumpling effect would be more realistic. But thats just my two cents.

Yeah I know, thanks for the comments - I just did this one quickly - to see if the technique was any use. Didn't really spend any time fussing with it if you know what I mean.

I'm just working on version 2 at the mo - its a fair bit better I think. I was originally trying to avoid too much manual airbrushing, that was against the point of the experiment. I can draw convincing drapes but the whole point is to get a really complex texture! Version 2 will be on its way soon.
