This was done a while ago ~year.
Self crit-
Perspective is not followed closely enough. Even though this was a sketch, just for design direction, it does not feel right because there are so many wonky things going on all over. Every little error multiplies on itself.
The color is a little monotone, with variations in material and local color not well thought out. This is a complex mechanical subject; there would be so many finishes and materials that should be used. I kinda covered them all with dust. The glass windows and the glass cockpit help.
The little ship is not my design. The value range on it is a little deep, the blacks got a little out of hand. It could be fixed by a few more dark accents in the foreground.
The red glow in the hangar is just not working. It is bright enough that it would be influencing more stuff around it.
From a design sense, there is monotone not only in color, but in so many ways. I have not played up differences enough in different areas. I need areas of less and more activity.
But I am really sick of doing this kind of imagery. |

HOLY SHEET indeed...
That ROCKS. I would have said **oo**! if I only saw the image on its own.
I have a feeling that you are **oo**... hmm tbns.net/sijun/**oo**? Perhaps Worthless_meat_sack is a renaisannce alias?
Hope you can clarify this..

very nice self-criticism
I would like to add that some parts of the pic doesn't fit in so good-->the highlighted stones to the left and the backgroud to the right
they seem to me more or in a different way rendered like the rest of the picture
me likes the windows best

Spooge: sad to hear you're sick of this sort of thing because I have a real soft spot for these sorts of gritty, detailed landscapes. This looks like the start of something that could be really cool.
What sort of work do you prefer if not this?

Well looks like Row cleared that up for me. If you know what I mean.. So you changed for anonymity reasons? Is this a known fact, cos I didn't realise that you were one and the same **oo**
I also think that your self crit is really quite accurate. It would be great if I were able to notice the obvious flaws in my work. Hey thats what this place is for!? To hit you in the head saying 'Blindly obvious fact #1'... etc.
Sick of doing this sort of imagery!? OMG you don't seem to realise how good at it you really are!... I can understand it may be 'boring' (for lack of a better word).. in the long run.
Just keep in mind that ppl really like seeing this sort of stuff. It would be a pity for you to give up on it completely.. keep doing them, maybe occaisionally whilst you develop another type of imagery which you obviously want to try, as something new. |

You criticize your work too when you're done with it? The image itself is very nice, I love the feeling of it, the dirty site, the industrial stuff, but the flaws as mentioned are there.
Thanks for sharing this piece, it's a very nice image, even beyond the flaws you pointed out, but keep in mind that not everyone is as anal retentive to detail and correctness as we are... =)
cheers,
frost.
PS - I really made a fool out of myself in some thread discussion about how I see my work and how others see it, but you seem to be on a simular path as I am about self criticism... cheer up mate. =)

What can I say... simply beautiful. You probably don't want to hear crits from me, because seems like you already know the faults in the pic. |

Heh, Collosimo, that is Craig. It has been since... May 2000. And what the hell is with the **oo** ? Are you against using the word Spooge? :P
..sorry back to the image. Craig, like Frost mentioned, I have such a hard time with you being so god damned self-critical!*$*($&* What the hell is going on around here? I just battled this out with Frost 20 minutes ago.
You must be aware that literally tens of thousands of aspiring digital artists look up to you. Do you think this is for no reason? Your work is absolutely breathtaking. Although I find it really hard to swallow seeing you cut yourself up like a "worthless sack of meat", I truly admire that you are hell-bent on fixing every little error you can come up with (you too, Frost).. but it seems like you are striving for perfection, and that is unreasonable. No one is perfect, how can you get down on yourself for not being what no one else has EVER achieved? |

Now that is really educational. Personally (once I get over the initial "wow" of seeing it), I can see a few of the things you mentioned, but having you point the less obvious ones out is terrific.
Thanks for posting and typing! |

It's trickier to change accounts with this new UBB ain't it. heh, confusion reigns.
well, thanks to my weenie screen res the top part (from the dudes upwards) fit nicely in me explorer window and seeing that as I wandered back to the computer, thought it was what the common folks would call "sick mate. Sick!". Those rocks in the top left are completely bonkers.
So, like everyone else says, cheers.
What was it for, dare I ask? |

The perspective problems are so subtle when your values are so perfect. Wow, that's a pretty nifty sketch. So immersive, it's very hard to find things wrong. |

I agree with your selfcrits. My eye wanders a lot when I look at it, there are a lot of details but none of em seem to be the "focal point" or whatever u call it. Perhaps the hangar/landing pad should have been lit up more, and thus attract the eye more? Hmm I dunno... ur not gonna redraw it anyways ne? |

Thanks for taking the time to do this spooge. I learned a whole lot about the thought process of making a piece like this!
Much thanks and a great painting if you ask me

I cant think of any critiques, and I'm hardly qualified. All I can say is, amazing, always. Craig, you're one of my biggest role models. One day I'll be where you are *dreams, hopes, prays, doubts* .
There obviously is alot in a name around here at sijun's forum. It took a little longer than usual for your threads to take off, as the usually do. People just won't click on a thread if they dont know the artist, or it doesnt have alot of replies. *sigh* Kinda makes for some high barriers for entry for us amatuer artists; know what I mean? |

god i wish i saw this scene come to life, hell i wish i could do stuff just like this. i want to see something in my head, and paint it out with some so-so realism.
afgsfds anyways that looks awesome, although the perspective problems really do hurt it :/
ugh, some of the stuff in there looks horrablly real! |

I really like the colors. But considered your skills, the only part of the image, that really works is the upper left one and even there are some mistakes (the light shining thing (whatever it is) does not respond to the ground.) That glas-cube is really great, and I wonder what kind of frustrated people are sitting in there.
The garrage with the red light looks strange. Maybe its just too small, or maybe its just the light.
It must be frustrating to do something youre are not satisfied with, and everybody is saying: "Hey thats perfect. Youre alreay good enough. Stop learning."
Sorry for my english

We've know Spooge is Worthless_Meat_Sack for more than a year now. It's no big secret, I think he just uses it when he's not so happy with the pic.

Thought I would answer before the abyss…
Well, sketch is maybe a wrong term, connotes the wrong thing. It was a design image to be used by modelers and texture artists to make this place in 3-d. Also it was used to show bean counters what their money was going to be spent on. So it really is not a finished piece of art, to stand on it’s own.
I should have made the tube that stretches over the mid ground really on a different grid. Right now it is either out of perspective or just a little skewed. Should make it really different to show it is intentionally placed.
Rowan, I like to do different things. I think the Final Fantasy work put the nail in the coffin for architectural work like this. Pirates are fun. I am working on an elf pic right now. Since I have never done an elf, it is fun to try. I like variety, but nobody pays you to experiment and learn, too bad. Like some hothouse flower, I like the steamy steep slopes of the learning curve. I need a patron!!
Collismo, being able to crit your own work is a good skill to have. But there is always something to be done. I post as the glorious meat sack cause I am a little tired of the polarized reactions I get as the other guy. I know this kind of thing sells, and I have done it enough to become competent at it, and I will do other things for fun. That is why I am hereJ
Frost, glad you like it. I am not really down on myself, but I guess with a name like that and a paragraph pointing out flaws it might be easy to get that feeling. I avoid being fat and happy. That is a good way to put it.
Frosted Flame, I don’t think I am trying for perfection, but I am trying to get better, and I think I am. Since coming here I have started doing figures and I am much better than I was.
I find it really uncomfortable if people are looking up to me. If this is true, well, then the part of me they would do best to emulate is to never be satisfied and always strive on. I think it is one thing to say “I suck” in a general way and another to make specific statements about an image. That’s all I was doing here.
Hmm. What is it that I have done that no one else has ever achieved?
Francis, my pleasure. I think I told you I had a rendering teacher at art center that if he used the term line drawer it was the lowest cut he could think of. He was trying to get the students to use value instead of lines. Hehe… How’s the lines coming? But ya know, I like the lines, really. It adds another dimension and a graphic quality to things. But I tguess to do that well you have to know how to show form without lines first.
Pixtur, yes there are some areas on the upper left that work with some subtlety. The rest of it…
ANJ-77 No, it will remain as it is. It did its job, and has little potential for anything else.
Farwalker, Big gestural landscapes. With sexy anime chrome death chicks wielding atomic axes. Just kidding about that last part. I think I would like to do a lot of things, always different. That is what keeps my ears perked up, I think.
Cicinimo, if no one replies, that is a loud message to go back to the drawing board. Contrary to what a lot of people think, spooge has posted quite a few images here that get only a few replies. But is understand what you are saying, and I don’t like the baggage that a reputation brings. It seems to be polarizing and people’s true reaction to the work is lost.
