What can I say... It's a bat, rendered with photoshop + mouse.

I like it, but everything besides the mouth looks very flat. If you worked some on that then this pic would be even better. I'm digging the teeth.

Hi. I told you I would drop by and help you out. So here I am.

Bronson: "I've seen worse "...Yeah I bet that was helpful, next time just don't say anything...

Well apart from that...

Crit:

Definitely freaky... I like your attention to detail.. the veins in the nose, the gums and teeth..(not many people even think about attempting to do that! so good work, you have done quite well there.)

The first thing I noticed was also the flatness.. I agree with Typhon, that improving that aspect of the painting would make an instant beneficial effect on the rest.

I am finding it hard to read the form of the bat.. I can see the nose pointing at us, and the jaw opened and snarling at us, but I can't see how the rest of the face fits in with it... in terms of its form. To me it looks like it has gone wonky one way (to our left).

This stems back to the flatness issue. I would be interested to see the line drawing for this painting (assuming you did a pencil drawing first?).. as I think that the flatness is not primarily a rendering thing. I think it is mainly due to your original drawing. Define the form a little more carefully at this stage.. try and feel the form all around the bats head. Use reference material to help you understand the shape and proportions of the head. Simplify the shape at the beggining and work out your 3 dimensionality. Then work in the details. Like Mick says... work from the general to the specific. I am aware that you know this, and that you probably did it, but as far as I can tell you need to grasp the fundamental shape of the bats head before you do fun things like rendering detail. So work on the 'general' for a bit longer, because if you get this right you'll be able to move on further with your art. Thats my opinion of course... and I do not know your intentions for your painting, or the direction you were pushing it in. I'm sure you'll tell me though. (tommorow maybe *friday*)

I could crit some more, but I only thought it neccesary to concentrate on the main issues. There is no point for me to go into rendering techniques or lighting etc.. I'll do more of that in the future.

Overall, I'm fairly impressed at the level of difficulty you attempted, and you did pretty well too. (I'm learning too.. when it comes to doing paintings myself.. well.. err.. I suck.)

Hope you don't mind the criticism.. I want to help you with your paintings. Hope my advice helps. I'll probably talk to you tomorrow...

cya.

i find this very interesting. it could be a kind of "dark picasso" since it seems to abandon depth and 3 dimensionality very much. the only thing i am missing here are the distinctive features of a bat (i.e. wings etc.) but then again taken the artistic freedom it is not really necessary to show them.

collossimo: as usual very kind, elaborate and helpful criticism. i like that- thanks for taking the time.

This is soooooo cool....the only "critique"
I have is the "proportions ...they are just
a little off. Try looking closely at "face Proportions" and adjust the angle of the face and you'll have a winner!!!

The lack of responses is quite disheartening, so I appreciate that you have taken the time to help me.

Collosimo (LOL!) > Thanks for the great critique, I see exactly what you mean. You don't know how much I laughed when I read "Like Mick says..." Anyhow, I've noted the faults you kindly pointed out I'll get to work rectifying them.

Perplexer & Catnip.. thank you also for the feedback, of course you're both right. Again, I'll work on the faults you pointed out.

That's ok..

You are here to learn so post all you like and ask anything.

Post your next version of this, in this same thread, so that it doesn't take up more room on the forum, and so that we will be able to compare and see the changes from the original, and the discussion.

I'm looking forward to seeing how you go with it.

Mick would say just that.. and it is quite funny because its one of his favourite sayings whenever we draw or paint. It must be a point he wants to drive into us! and with good reason, it really makes sense...

Didn't come today?(friday)...

Oh well... as long as you finish and bring everything next week.

cya on monday. Can you believe we have to finish our powerhouse thingies with only one lesson to go! ah well.. better find a photocopier.. muhaha *evil laugh*

aaachoo! *evil sneeze* (damn its cold this arvo.)
