This is the 3D modeled version of the design I posted some sketches for a while back. The turrets and details need more texture work, and I still have some weathering to do, but you get the general idea.

(The super-mondo psycho-weasel 1600x1200 version is here.)

Great work, cool design, damn good texturework and I REALLY LOVE the color of the ship.

Its my new wallpaper.

How many polys does that have?

@Wyatt - his homepage says Lightwave

Thanks for the comments.

The model is for a comic I'm working on, the first section of which should be done sometime this month. It will be articulated and further detailed as the needs of the comic dictate... which will include the bridge, hangar and some interiors. It was modeled in Lightwave[6], textured with Photoshop (natch). The current polycount is 18,169.

Wyatt: yeah, I agree it could use some more specularity on the exposed metal bits. The green armor should be fairly matte, though.

TheRabbit: now that you mention it, it does look a bit WingCommanderI-ish. Not intentional, but not a bad thing either... the comic has a WCI-ish space opera tone.

Here's the next project, one of the escort vessels:

Wow! Man, grrreat stuff!!
Bah, I always feel like a goober when I critique anything, but here's my two cents:
The six circle doo-hickies look like there should be some modeling for them. You can see some polys along the rounded endges of both engines, tiny bump maps for the panel edges would add a lot with specular hits to emphasize the panel edges. Blah blah blah--other nitpicky stuff.

Great stuff, man!

Awsome stuff. Is this for an online comic or an actual published comic? I would like to see it when it's done. If only I had the will to open that 3d max book and learn to do something like that. Btw how many hours did it take you to create that?

we want more,

Hi. Looks really good, but the model doesn't look like it's nearly the same scale as the sketch. (It looks like it's more of a small fighter than a battlecruiser.) Probably just playing with the FOV would fix it.

Hey that looks really great!

Since you're still texturing a few things, I thought I'd mention the hull a bit. Since this is a battle cruiser scale is obviously important so you wouldn't want to overdo it but a good bump map that defined the panel lines and added definition to the little grills and things on the surface would help a lot. In addition to the spec map that was mentioned this will also lend definition and detail to the hull and simulate realism.

Just my $0.02 Great job though! Keep us posted on the book, I'll want to snag a copy!

Sweet! Love those designs.... There are many factors that make this an awesome set of work. IMO its mostly the solid and effective design of the ships, disregading the texture and colour.

Post more! and tell us some more about this comic..

I usually think all spaceship models are boring and uninventive, or they're inventive but poorly executed and generally crap..

This, however, makes me smile. This is hands down one of the best models I've seen in months. It's actually sleek and sexy. My only suggestion is the repetitive one about a little more specularity, but don't overdo it. The green matte look is speculactacular. (har har har) That and the big artillery pods on the wings should mesh in a little better with the wings. The just look like they're sitting on there, with little or no support whatsoever. Maybe.. put a little nurb patch around the sides so there's a slope from the wings to the pods?

Kudos.

Thanks again for the kind and helpful comments.

The comic will be an online project... I'll be sure to post a note here when the first section is up. I have a brief overview page set up if you're interested to know more.

Building the model took about a month, partially because I'm still learning Lightwave. It took a full week to texture.

I'll be sure to add bump and spec maps where appropriate, and I plan to add more small details (including a lot of small lights) to try to help improve the sense of scale. And hopefully the turrets and their housing will look better-integrated when they are properly textured (all the turrets currently have placeholder textures).

I remember your original sketch, you've done an outstanding job getting it to where you did. I can't wait to see the end result of this next one!
