Nothin' too special, just got tired of doing sci-fi stuff for a while. Please forgive my sentimental nature.

Interesting...Very moody... Maybe make a small ray of sunshine poking through the clouds, to add more atmosphere? Nice colors too... |

Nice Very moody...I think the knight and the horse might be too high in value when compared to the backround--Maybe brighten up the ground a little to make it look like that area is getting hit by the same light...I don't know. Cool stuff |

I love what you've done sedone
The atmosphere is very nice. I especially like the foreground. The addition of water makes it very pleasant and calm |

Hey fellas, thanks fer the comps and crits.
Some of your suggestions would more'n'likely make the picture better, but I pretty much had to force myself to quit working on it. I have a knack for not knowing when to stop.
For no particular reason save boredom, here's what this pic started out looking like. This was done w/a mouse at school during a lecture.
And here's a section of the full-size pic, cuz I know you guys are into that sorta' thing.
Don't let me kill this thread. Keep posting comments! |

Hey nice... There are so many ways to interpret this picture.. you could use it to educate an art class... What do you see in this pic? what feelings does it portray? why does this work?... what techniques and principles did the artist use?
etc... |

The closeup rocks!
The horse seems to have different light coming at it than the ground below. A few brighter spots on the ground would level it out, i think. |

man, you have such cool signatures that you always get the picture stylish because of that
Looks good sedone-man. I think the shape of the horse and all is very nice. Personally I think the values are what lacks a bit. SInce you have very similar contrasts on the sky, and ground, and everything kind of float into eachother. I think it might look more appealing if you lighten up the sky, since it's suppose to look like bright cloudy after the storm type of setting I guess ? ANd, then get that reflection over on the water...And, make that type of setting affect the ground as well. Bad explanation and a bad attempt, but I hope you understand what I try to say....
long time since we've chatted ! How are things going. Are you finished with your education ? |

Collosimo, that's a cool thing to say. The answer to some of those questions would be "he blundered along blindly".
Gecko, I see what you mean now.
Joachim, cool paintover! I was hoping you'd take a stab at it. To be honest, I fell into the trap of not wanting to touch that damn horse. I was so happy it actually looked like a horse! Thanks for the pointers. I'll keep them in mind if/when I rework this pic (what am I talking about, I'll probably start on it in a few minutes here).
I'll be out of school in a few weeks, then it's all over baby! No more learning anything else for me! |

I think you are really onto something here! That hi rez horse is just about perfect. Accurate, gestural, effective.
I think what J was saying is true, IMHO, but I would supplement what he said a little. You can have close values and still separate shapes, but you must have low contrast within the shapes. Then they separate. The example below I exaggerated the fog a bit, which is a good illustration of this idea.
This is not presented as an improvement of what you did, just a thought on a different way to organize space with values (hehe throw a lot of fog in there)
What you have is a broken cloud day, with the foreground and the rider area in sun, but the middle ground in shadow. Maybe try to back off the darks in those two lit areas? Keep what is in light and shadow clearly in your mind.
but I really like both images a lot, even though they are a little different, as mine is, too.

This is so encouraging and inspiring! Both of those paintovers clarify a lot of things for me. Spooge, I think you captured the feel of what I was going for in 1/3 of the time it took me.
Alright, I'm gonna roll all this over a bit. If I had any qualms about working on this painting before, it's all gone now. Thanks for the input, guys, and a million blessings upon your houses. |
