Just messing around with duotone to get different values. I actually prefer my very early start for this (blocking in the major shadows) as opposed to the following, but oh well. Just a doodle.

Please forgive my earlier wording, Holly. What I was attempting (but failed) to say was I was messing around with duotone to achieve different light intensities (light values). I'm really enjoying doing extremely intense lighting, as it makes great shadows and really defines form. Here's another quick doodle...crap, but oh well.

Hope you don't mind..
I did a paintover to illustrate a few things.
There's some smaller anatomical and proportional problems..
When doing things with such high contrasts, be sure to give the illusion of somethings there even if it's not. You could start with sketching up everything and then actually remove all the unnecesary lines afterwards. It's a much safer way than to start directly without any lines. Also, cropping the picture properly will make the appearence of the whole picture much better. Allow some space in the direction he's looking and remove empty space on the back of his head, not the other way around, because that causes some really strange sense of unbalance in the picture. Oh yeah, almost forgot. Be aware on how you use thick and thin lines.
Argh! Hard to explain for me in English..
Anyway hope this can help you in any way.

Oh. Why don't you call it a light source?

Mikael, thanks for your great overpaint/critique. It was extremely helpful in evaluating my work - and also planning further work. The proportion / anatomical problems...well, I was mainly going for a cartoony look with some shadow pools to define form. However, I can see where I flopped in developing the areas correctly. The shape of the face wasn't my intention at first; I started out with a 500-pixel brush to throw a blob in and began to carve away, not having any idea what I was doing. But yeah, I can see all the points you mentioned, and I learned a lot from what you said. (Hehe, just noticed your picture looks like Joachim + 200 pounds )
Holly, I didn't really call it a light source because I was merely explaining the intensity of the light, not the actual position of the source. But yeah, I could have called it a light source for clarification
Anyway, yet another b/w sketch here. This took a bit longer (damn rocks) .

Jeez Micke, the minute you touch someone elses portrait the poor guy ends up looking just like Joachim. No one would want that! <shudder> |
