the wings do look detached, but u know that.
I suggest gathering pics of real clouds and paint over them, just do a whole bunch of fast ones with different light settings. |

The Rocks and the Dragon look great but stneil is right, the wings do looks sorta blurry , or maybe its that there almost the same colour as the background, also his front flaws look a bit off, I cant put m finger on it, there too chubby or soemthing, I dont know.

Nice pic.
As far as a cloud painting study goes you seem to have strayed off task in order to produce something that generates more interest. Nice outcome, however far off task it is.
I agree about the wings being blurry. Sharpen them up a bit and finish them to a higher degree. They are in a need of a bit of texture too. Texture just like the body would be absolutely perfect. You gotta remember that a dragon probably wouldnt have much smooth skin on it all all, except for minor areas, and of course the skin on the wings. Even they would have battle damage and a bit of texture.
Hew mentioned the oddities of the forearms. They are pretty good but I think what he is finding strange is the fact that there is not a lot of definition between the arm, wrist and hand. I'm no expert on dragon anatomy of course! but I think that you should thin the arm down toward the hand so that it actually looks like a noticable wrist. It just looks a bit chubby the way you have it at the moment. I think that perhaps the problem that Hew pointed out also could be because of the hands and fingers themselves. I imagine the claws of a dragon to be bony but still strong and powerful. In your case they are a little bit undefined and maybe chubby.
This really is a cool pic you got here. Very envious of your talent. I hope my comments help.
(edit:schpelling! you know how it is with these big replies.)

Wow! Thanks for the feedback everyone!
The two main issues that you pointed out were the two problems that I saw with the piece also - blurry wings and big hands.
Ordinarily I'll work a piece up as a sketch and then scan it to color. With this one I did the sketch directly with the tablet and fairly quickly and got right into coloring without really a plan for what it was going to come out like as an experiment .
Thanks for all the constructive feedback.
Pat

aside from the anatomy and the clouds I really like the compisiton, but the lighting just isn't right, the wings really should be in more of a shadow. This would really make a very cool contrast shape to go against the sky. |
