Had a photo of this gal wearing a hat she got at Disneyland (I think its the one the evil queen wore in "Sleeping Beauty") and thought it might make a cool quick fantasy painting. I'd post the ref, but I want to get her permission first. Anyhow, the photo was just used to get a likeness, and the pose and lighting here are radically different.
Its no Jason Manly, but I think I've improved a bit since those first experiments I did in painter. There's definite proportion issues with this one . . . I think the shortness of her arms, and the ambiguity of her torso contributes to a slight "midgety" feeling . . . I mean, she's only 5'3" in real life, but I think I've made her look about 4'6" here
Comments are welcome . . . I'm primarily a 3D guy, but I'd love to get a lot better with this 2D bidniss.

yeah, nice colors. Minor crits: the hand could be a little bigger, and the tip of the nose looks kind of flat--maybe add a bit more definition? Good work regardless.

Thanks guys.
Justin: I agree about the hand . . . hands, especially female ones, are something that have always been a stumbling block for me. I need to just sit down and do some hand studies and get over it already.
Love your work, BTW.

Real nice.
Perhaps some defintion and some smoothing over. That really gestural fast past technique is great but maybe some more solid worked area's could soften the mood. |

Thanks guys . . . I like working loose because its so different from the anal-retentive hyperrealism I go after in my 3D work. I once saw a book about a school of painters called the Bay Area Figurativists that had a big influence on the way I paint. They used these broad, expressive strokes and color fields . . . something about that style really appealed to me.
And yeah, she's cute as hell
BTW, I just updated with my web site with a few traditional pieces . . . its ancient stuff though . . . haven't painted in a couple years.
